SCMP: Falun Gong using 'remote-controlled broadcasts' [Excerpt]

Nov. 2, 2001

November 1, 2001

Outlawed and hounded by Chinese authorities, followers of the Falun Gong spiritual movement are... broadcasting to the public to try to get their message out... Falun Gong followers have set up modified tape players attached to large loudspeakers near parks, schools and government offices.

[...]

Once activated by remote control or by a timer, the players broadcast a recorded message by Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong who lives in exile in the United States.

[...]

The ingenious broadcasts highlight the dogged resistance of Falun Gong followers against government efforts to crush the group. Authorities have imprisoned thousands of Falun Gong members since the government banned the movement in July 1999.

[...]

Falun Gong says the government has encouraged officials and police to use torture and other brutality to force followers to renounce the group. Falun Gong says more than 300 followers have been killed.

Falun Gong followers insist theirs is a peaceful non-political movement. They believe that the practice's slow-motion meditation exercises and philosophies promote health, good citizenship and even supernatural powers for accomplished practitioners.
