Tan Yongjie - One Who Has Made It Out of the Darkest Corner of the Earth

Aug. 10, 2001 |   Dafa practitioners -- Sydney

While reading the experience of Tan Yongjie, published on Minghui Net, July 30, tears filled my eyes and my heart ached. A man of determination had crawled out, step by step, from the darkest corner of the earth...

1. Both legs suffered third degree burns in thirteen areas, left untreated for 41 days, yet without infection or other complications - a miracle in medical history.

On June 2, according to the report, three policemen took turns torturing Tan. First, they beat him severely, then forced him to sign a statement that he would no longer practice Falun Dafa. Yet he remained calm and composed. Later, they strapped him to a pole. Removing a rusty steel rod from the fire, one policeman pressed the burning rod on Tan's legs while asking him, "Do you still want to practice?" This barbaric act was done repeatedly. Screaming with agony, Tan then had a seizure, and lost control over his bodily functions. Later, the guard locked him up in a cell. Seeing that he could no longer walk or sleep with such pain, they dumped him in an orchard. Since the farm was not under surveillance, he managed to escape.

On June 10, Tan boarded a cargo boat. After suffering fourteen days of agony being tossed by the sea, he landed at Long Beach, California on June 24. He then traveled to Houston. When he arrived in Houston, he was penniless. The Houston police sent him to the Star of Hope Shelter. On July 13, while having a shower, Tan's wounds opened up again, and he was admitted to the Park Plaza Hospital. The doctor diagnosed his injuries as third degree burns, in thirteen places. As the burns were too wide and deep, natural healing was not possible. The surgeon had to perform skin grafts. Tan is now recovering and will be discharged soon.

Anyone with any medical knowledge knows that the effects of a third degree burn can be life-threatening. Even with good facilities, statistically, about three-quarters of the patients whose burned area exceeds 30% of the total body surface die of infection. If the wounds become infected, amputation may be required to save the patient's life. Death from sepsis following an infected third degree burn is quite common. In Tan's case, sepsis was not observed. Research on the immune system of those suffering from third degree burns is being carried out, but the findings are inconclusive.

Tan's case demonstrates that Dafa practitioners have extraordinarily strong immune systems, as well as an unusual will to live. This mastery over severe bodily injuries is exceedingly intriguing to the medical world. Jiang and his accomplices' allegations about the death of 1,400 people caused by practicing Falun Gong simply cannot be substantiated.

2. Being virtually without legs to walk on and without a penny to his name, is the fact that Tan Yongjie managed to endure tremendous hardships and travel over the ocean to America not a tremendous display of the unusual vitality of a Falun Dafa practitioner? In China, the ultimate path following such torture is usually death. However, Tan chose to escape to another country. Let's compare this incident with our SOS Walk, where there were no police waiting to capture us, nor any bandits like Jiang and his lackeys chasing from behind. We did not have to hide, but walked on an open road. We were not short of food or drink. We were not in poverty, nor were we disabled. Every one of us was healthy and strong. All we got was a few blisters, yet we would complain. Look at Tan Yongjie, a giant who walked out of the darkest corner of the world, and every step he took was agonizing. One can imagine that if he had been burned to death in the camp, his family would have gotten back a jar of ashes. His death would be labeled a "suicide" or "heart attack." Yet miraculously, he appeared in the United States. Tan's escape is a slap on the face for Jiang and his accomplices. The terms "suicide, mass suicide, and self-immolation" of other practitioners who have died can now be clearly viewed as cases of murder.

3. A person who believes in Truth, Compassion and Forbearance was tortured in his own country, but saved and protected in another country.

Tan Yongjie's case is a big blow to "the opening of Masanjia to foreign media (a reference to show tours of the notorious women's labor camp)." It exposes the wickedness of Jiang and his accomplices. The use of a burning iron on captives is a great symbol of Jiang's so-called "Best Period of Human Rights."
