Think from the Overall Perspective of Fa-Rectification

Sept. 4, 2001 |   By a practitioner in Washington DC

Recently I have heard some fellow practitioners' experiences from participating in the hunger strike in front of the Chinese Embassy in DC. On the one hand, I am moved by the deep devotion of practitioners to Dafa; on the other hand, I also see some problems. Here I would like to share my thoughts with others.

In Western society, using a hunger strike to express one's wish is a serious matter. Even if just a few practitioners did it spontaneously, its effect in society is important to the entirety of Dafa, as well as practitioners' clarifying the truth to the government and society.

Since the Washington DC Experience Sharing Conference, based on our experiences in telling the truth to society over the last two years, we have adopted forms that are more easily understood by ordinary people. The goal is that more people can understand and support Falun Gong. Such examples include "Walk to DC" and "Rescue Dr. Teng Chunyan." These activities have something in common: their goals are to encourage actions of the entire society, including various government bodies and ordinary citizens. They require that all Dafa disciples act as one body, in various regions and facets of society, and are well planned and coordinated. Of course Dafa doesn't have the kind of organization found in ordinary human society. We don't rely on commands and conventional organizing. Disciples all think and act from the standpoint of Dafa as a whole, actively cooperating with each other. In delivering a message to society or the media, if we don't communicate, cooperate, or coordinate with each other, the result will not be good. So the best result can be achieved when the disciples on hunger strike and those releasing information to the media all understand the issue from the standpoint of the Fa and the real meaning of telling the truth, and think and act integrally. This is especially true for the coordinators in each area. The campaign to release Professor Zhang Kunlun was initiated by Canadian practitioners, but took the coordinated efforts of all practitioners. At the recent DC Experience Sharing Conference, through this kind of integrated effort, we were able to parade in thousands in front of Capitol Hill as one body. No ordinary human organization can achieve that; neither can the cultivation state focused around personal consummation.

In using the form of hunger strike to support Mainland Chinese practitioners and save ordinary people, it seemed like in the beginning the practitioners in the front line were mostly thinking about whether they should go on a hunger strike, what attitudes they had for doing it, and how they overcame the obstacles and let go of their attachments. What wasn't much talked about was how to look from the standpoint of Dafa as a whole. For example, in order to achieve the best results in ordinary human society, some things that might have been considered were: what kind of disciples should be in the front line, how should other practitioners cooperate, why each was suitable for that role, what was the best way to help ordinary people understand Dafa, and how to communicate with and complement other important current activities.

From an everyday person's perspective, the message of a hunger strike is much stronger than a walk. Thus, there are higher requirements for us to act as a whole. It is also essential that practitioners truly understand the Fa and principles to foster better coordination at different levels.

I hope to hear more about other practitioners' perspectives on this matter. Please let me know if anything here is not right.
