Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. Zhang Chuansheng, Associate Professor of Chengdu University, male, 54 years old, died from being beaten and strangled on February 15, 2002, by police at the Chengdu City Detention Center, because he persisted in cultivating Falun Gong.

Six years ago, Zhang Chuansheng was deeply moved by reading Zhuan Falun. Since then he has been following the principles of Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance in every aspect of his life. His colleagues, neighbors, friends and family have all praised the positive changes in him since he began to practice Falun Dafa, and respected him unanimously.

Falun Gong has been persecuted in China since July 1999. Zhang Chuansheng continued to practice Falun Gong in his home and did not practice or protest in public. All he did, out of his truthful and kind nature was to tell the truth about how he benefited from Falun Gong to those people who misunderstood Falun Gong. Even though he practiced only at home, the local police would never leave him alone. They justified their persecution of him using the excuse that "his mind was never transformed [to give up Falun Dafa]."

Two days before the 2002 Spring Festival, Zhang Chuansheng went back to his hometown of Ya'an with his wife and 6-year-old daughter. The next day, on the eve of the lunar New Year, personnel from the Chengdu City Simaqiao Police Station and a Chengdu University Administrator followed him to his hometown. They said that there was an urgent matter that they needed to discuss with him. They forcibly arrested him, and told his family that he would be released in just 24 hours. It was past 4 p.m. His family begged them to let him finish the New Year's Eve dinner (which traditionally involves the reunion of the entire family). The police cursed and refused their request, and detained Zhang Chuansheng in the Chengdu Detention Center.

Only four days later, on January 4 of the lunar calendar, at 11 p.m., Zhang's family was notified that "Zhang Chuansheng died at 9 a.m. on February 15, due to a heart attack." The dead body was too frightening to observe. His face was swollen, and was a greenish, purple and black color. There were many bloodstains on his face and mouth. On his neck there was a deep purple-green mark that was the width of two fingers. Zhang's family asked the reason. The evil police answered, "His hands were in tight fists. We were not intending to beat or choke him to death, we were trying to open his fists." Immediately, the police threatened Zhang's family members, "The whole family will be in danger if any one of you dares to tell the cause of Zhang Chuansheng's death!"

Even now, those killers have never received lawful punishment. On the contrary, they received merit awards.

Instead of being praised and acknowledged by the government and the university's administration, this 54-year-old professor, who worked so hard in the field of education and guided so many students, was brutally beaten and choked to death. He was killed by the Chengdu City Police Station and the Chengdu University administrators.
