May 9, 2002

(Clearwisdom.net) According to an April 30 report by the World Journal from Washington D.C, Chinese Vice-president Hu Jintao spoke extensively about the Taiwan issue today in the U.S. Congress. Regarding the issue of human rights - he refused to accept four letters from members of Congress that raised human rights issues and urged China to release political prisoners. The Congressmen expressed their displeasure with Hu, commenting that Hu's action did not conform to the most basic diplomatic courtesy.

Hu Jintao met with U.S Congressmen and House Representatives this afternoon. Mr. Pelosi, the House Democratic Whip pointed out after the meeting that the congressmen thank Beijing for supporting anti-terrorism. Dialogue also touched on trade and Beijing joining in WTO earlier. The congressmen also voiced their concern regarding China's missile proliferation. When the issue of human rights was brought up, the Chinese Vice-president had a deaf ear.

The Congressional Human Rights Group joint director Mr. Lantos also expressed his disappointment and discontent with the Chinese side's refusal to accept the letters. He thought it didn't conform to basic courtesy. He said that members of Congress would remember this incident for a long time to come.
