On September the 26th 2003, the International Challenge Conference on Human Rights was jointly held by the Northern Europe Human Rights Association and the United Nations Commission on Human Rights at Malmstenssalen Hall, at the University of Gothenburg.

Participants included the acting high commissioner of the UN Commission on Human Rights Bertarand Ramcharan, Professor Asbjorn Eide of the UN Commission on Human Rights, Morten Kjarum of the Racial Discrimination committee of the UN Commission on Human Rights and director of the Danish Centre for Human Rights, Bryhildur Florenz of the Icelandic Centre for Human Rights, Nils Butenschon of the Nordic Centre for Human Rights, and Paul Hunt, special reporter for the UN Commission on Human Rights, representatives from various human rights organisations in Sweden, and teachers as well as students, who engage in professional human rights training courses.

Falun Gong practitioners raised questions with the chairman of the UN commission regarding the continuing persecution of Falun Gong in China and the issue of immunity for dictators. The panellists explained from different angles and affirmed that the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese government has caught the attention of human rights organisations and led to condemnation by those organisations. Later, Falun Gong practitioners and the directors of human rights centres from various countries held further discussions.
