My Experience of Going from "Not Understanding" to "Understanding" the Fa by Memorizing Teacher's Articles

Dec. 28, 2003 |   A practitioner from Hunan Province, China

(Clearwisdom.net) I once read an article which mentioned a fact that some practitioners could not understand Teacher's Fa lectures written during the Fa-rectification period. I want to share here with everybody my experience of how I went from "not understanding" to "understanding" the Fa.

On July 16, 2001, Teacher published a new short article entitled "The Effect of Righteous Thoughts." When I first read it, I could not understand the second paragraph, even after several tries. I thought, this is not acceptable and I must understand it. Then I kept reading it repeatedly and tried to remember each character, each sentence and each paragraph, until I could remember the whole article. When I could recite the whole article fluently, I found that everything was understandable. From that time on, whenever Teacher published a new article or lecture, whether I could understand it or not, whether it was long or short, and whether it was easy to remember or not, I would keep reading it until I could recite it fluently. I feel this is very beneficial. It not only makes me able to understand, but also makes me able to follow Teacher's teaching on time, keeping pace with the process of Fa-rectification.

In order to memorize the article, you must read it repeatedly. That means you have been studying the Fa. During this process one naturally goes from "not understanding" to "understanding," and one will know how to act accordingly. A long time ago, Teacher told us in his "Seeking Discipleship with Teacher" that,

"All of the gong and Fa lie in the book, and one will naturally obtain them by reading Dafa. Those who learn it will change automatically, and they will already be in the Dao when they read the book over and over again."

Of course, it is no easy task to learn to recite Teacher's new articles or lectures within a short time. Teacher explained to us in Zhuan Falun,

"But actually, I think that whether it's hard depends on the person. A really average, ordinary person doesn't want to cultivate, and he'll feel that cultivation is just way too hard, that it's unthinkable, and he'll think it's a waste of time. He's an ordinary person and he doesn't want to cultivate, so he'll think it's really hard. Lao-zi said, 'When the highest type of men hear the Dao, with diligence they will practice it. When average men hear the Dao, it seems some is kept and some is lost. When the lowest type of men hear the Dao, they laugh at it heartily. If they didn't laugh at it, it wouldn't be the Dao.' For a true cultivator, I'd say it's easy--it's not some impossible mission."

I realized that all the sayings such as "I am old, my memory is not good. I can't remember. I am not well educated, so I can't recite them" and so on are nothing but stumbling blocks and evil interference.

"Every pass must be passed,
everywhere are demons."
("Tempering One's Mind and Heart" in Hongyin)

If you regard it as very large, then it will be very large and you can't get through. While you regard it as very small, it would be very small and you could get through just at a single stride.

"It's only that you might not want to overcome them. If you want to overcome them you can." (Zhuan Falun)

What I do is actually is the following. As soon as I get a new article or lecture, I read it through. Then, from the very beginning, I read one sentence and instantly memorize it, and keep going until I finished the last sentence of the first paragraph. Then I connect all the sentences in this paragraph until I can recite the whole paragraph fluently. In the same way, I go through the article from paragraph to paragraph until I can recite the whole article. Then, I will start from the beginning to recite the whole article again. It might happen that some sentences recited before have been forgotten. It doesn't matter. Read it again, and recite it again, three times, four times ... until I can recite the whole article fluently.

"If you're able to steel your will, no difficulty can block you, and I'd say it'll be no problem." (Zhuan Falun)

My experience tells me:

1. In the process of reciting the Fa, don't fear forgetting what has been recited. If you forget any part of the article, just read it again, and recite it again. This process itself is a process of studying the Fa steadily. And studying the Fa in such a way, one's attention is not likely to wander since one is concentrating one's attention on the article, and the effect is necessarily good.

2. This is how I schedule my time. As soon as I get a new article or lecture, I dedicate my Fa-study time mainly to reciting it. Teacher said in "Teaching the Fa at the Conference in Vancouver, Canada, in 2003,"

"Actually, every time I see you it's because I have things to say to you."

"Only when problems arise in the body at large or that have to do with Dafa's overall situation, or when there's a problem with the situation of your validating Dafa, only then do I talk about it."

"I don't teach the Fa arbitrarily."

We must do our best to have our thoughts keep pace with the course of Fa- rectification. Therefore, we must study the new articles and lectures well and we should use our time to guarantee it.

3. How much one should recite in a day depends on one's own situation. One can recite an article anytime and anywhere, such as on the way to clarifying the truth, doing housework, and so on. Any bit of time can be used to recite. My experience is that as long as you have a firm heart, you will have time and you can definitely recite the article.

Memorizing the article is not our purpose. Our purpose is using the process of memorization to study the Fa steadily, to make the Fa take root in our hearts, and to assimilate ourselves to the Fa. Then, we will understand how to cultivate ourselves and make improvement in our cultivation, how to help Teacher to rectify the Fa with righteous thoughts and righteous actions, and how to go straight on our road as a Fa-rectifying practitioner.

"With perseverance, they will certainly achieve Righteous Attainment in the future." ("Seeking Discipleship with Teacher" )

The above is a little experience in my Fa-study. If there is anything improper or not righteous, fellow practitioners please point it out with compassion.
