SARS Cases Found in Thirteen Post-Secondary Institutions in Beijing

(Clearwisdom.net) The Central News Agency (Taipei) reported on April 17 that according to reports from various universities in Beijing regarding SARS, probable SARS cases were found in thirteen universities, four of the cases from Beijing University. A senior professor from the Chinese University of Finance and Economics died from SARS, and many of those who visited him were infected.

In Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao reported that Li Mei, a staff member from Institute of Economics, Beijing University, was confirmed as having SARS. Her mother came to Beijing to seek treatment for SARS and died on April 15. Li Mei started to show symptoms on April 15 and is under treatment in isolation. Her daughter, who goes to a primary school affiliated with Beijing University, does not have any symptoms, but is in isolation. Over thirty teachers and staff from the same institute who were in close contact with Li Mei are in isolation.

According to some sources, to prevent SARS from spreading, the Institute of Economics of Beijing University, Beijing Central University of Finance, and Capital Normal University shut down classes on April 16.
