Facts of the Persecution
Prison director Cui instructed police to hold a brainwashing session to try to force practitioner Li Jiucheng to renounce Falun Gong. Since Mr. Li refused to cooperate with them, the police beat him with batons, shocked him with electric batons, slapped his face, and brutally beat him until he passed out. Then they poured cold water on him to wake him up, and continued to beat him cruelly for more than three hours, until Mr. Li lay paralyzed on the floor. As a result, Li Jiucheng was unable to take care of himself. Despite his condition, the police still attempted to prevent him from sleeping for more than a month, and forced him to work long hours. On the evening of May 4, 2004, policeman Ren Zhong was drunk and beat practitioner Mr. Wang Xuejun until Mr. Wang was paralyzed. Because practitioner Mr. Liu Fuming refused to cooperate with their unreasonable demands, the police shocked him, slapped his face, injured his fingers, beat him down to the floor, and then beat his head against the floor and the wall. Mr. Liu lost consciousness, so they poured cold water over him to wake him up, and then beat him some more. Practitioners Mr. Liu Fuli, Mr. Liu Haiquan, Mr. Rong Fengshan, and Mr. Zhang Mingxue have all been tortured and have suffered from long-term sleep deprivation.
Practitioner Ms. Song Yanqun, twenty-three years old, is a foreign language teacher and resident of Shulan City, Jilin Province. She was sentenced to twelve years in prison, because she practices Falun Dafa. Ms. Song is sick with tuberculosis in the Changchun City Heizuizi Women's Prison, has difficulty walking, and is extremely emaciated. During her TB treatment, she was not allowed to sleep until 11 p.m. This violates National Regulations, issued in September 2004, regarding patients undergoing tuberculosis treatment. It also violates labor camp admission rules.
Mr. Zhao Shujie lives in Chezhan Village, Changle Town, Changle County, Shandong Province together with his wife, son and daughter. The entire family practices Falun Dafa. In June 1999, his family was being closely monitored by the authorities. On one occasion they went out, but did not notify the authorities. Village Party Secretary Zhang Shunyi dragged Mr. Zhao to the village office building, and beat him until he lost conscious. Mr. Zhao had to be hospitalized for over a week before he could be released. Their entire family went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Dafa after the large-scale persecution of Falun Dafa began on July 20, 1999. Mr. Zhao Shujie went to Beijing a second time in May 2000. He was arrested and returned to his local police substation. His hands were handcuffed behind his back and Mr. Zhao was then hung up by the handcuffs, tortured, harassed and detained for one month. Their family possessions were all confiscated. Mr. Zhao's wife, Song Zhilan, and son Zhao Chunsheng were detained in the village government office building. Mr. Zhao, his wife and their son went to Beijing again in October 2000, to appeal. Mr. Zhao was sentenced to three years in the Wangcun Labor Camp in Jinan City, Shandong Province, where he was tortured with methods that included being forced to stand motionless facing the wall for days at a time, shocks from electric batons, sitting motionless on a small stool, and being locked in a meter square cell. Zhao Shujie was injured both psychologically and physically, to the point that he could not even work. It was not until December 2003, eleven months after his release, that he recovered enough to the point that he was able to do some work again. His wife Song Zhilan and their son Zhao Chunsheng were detained in Beijing for one month and forced to go through brainwashing sessions after they were brought back to their village. Their daughter, Zhao Xiaoxia, was arrested and taken to the Chengxi Police Substation after handing out Falun Dafa materials before the 2002 Spring Festival. She was verbally abused and tortured. Since Ms. Zhao was not eighteen years old at the time, the police detained her and sentenced her to one year at a labor camp, the sentence to be served when she reaches eighteen years of age.
The Dingzhou City "610 Office" chief, Cui Yuliang, and policeman Lu Shujun (both from Hebei Province), held many brainwashing sessions to "reform" several thousand Falun Dafa practitioners in Dingzhou City. They "fined" them, and sent steadfast practitioners to detention centers. Lu Shujun beat practitioners and tortured them by having them kneel down for long hours under the baking sun. The Dingzhou City Police Station director, Ma Tiezhu, sent many Falun Dafa practitioners to detention centers. He is responsible for the death of practitioner Ms. Sun Shouqi.
