Persecution of Practitioner Liu Ning from Hubei Province

Dec. 22, 2004 |   By Liu Ning

(Clearwisdom.net) My name is Liu Ning, and I'm from Hubei Province. In 1996, I was fortunate enough to find and learn Falun Gong.

My mother retired very earlier due to illness, and my father was the only one supporting the entire family of four people (I had a young brother). In 1998, my father died due to an illness. My mother no longer had any source of income. My younger brother then started working and I, having just graduated from school, looked for a job.

In 1998, I was hired by the Intercontinental Group. I attended the job training required for beginners. There were 50 trainees in the training class. My evaluation in the training was very good and was among the top three.

When I was in school, I volunteered to do cleaning work for the school and purchased the cleaning tools with my own money. I also helped the teachers in many administrative duties. The principal said to me, "I haven't seen a student like you in the 'decades of my educational career." I told her that I practiced Falun Dafa, which required practitioners to be good people. The principal was very happy. At the graduation ceremony, I was awarded with the title of "Excellent Student Representative," and "Excellent Student in Conduct and Academy."

However, to such a great cultivation practice that teaches people to be good, Jiang Zemin, out of his jealousy, started to persecute Falun Gong in July 1999.

A local policeman Ye Guohui came to my work unit and spread a rumor that the purpose for me to practice Falun Gong was that I wanted to be a "premier." The work unit didn't continue my contract when it expired in 2002 and I lost my job.

Ye Guohui also called and threatened my newly married wife, Xiao Zhang. Xiao Zhang was not a local resident. Ye Guohui threatened her with not giving her temporary residence permission and forcing her family of more than ten people to go back to the countryside. He also went to her work unit to threaten her boss. Under such pressure, Xiao Zhang divorced me.

Since July 1999, I have been sent to detention centers, brainwashing classes, and forced labor camps several times. In 2001, I was sentenced to forced labor. For 11 months in the forced labor camp, I was forced to undergo long-term, inhuman tortures that caused my lower limbs to become numb, severe pain on my both feet, and my vision to become blurred. Later my family sent me to the hospital to rescue me and spent 30,000 yuan in medical treatment over 21 days.

The persecution of Falun Gong practitioners is indeed devastating to human nature. For example, Ye Guohui threatened Xiao Zhang and forced her to divorce me. At the same time, they sent me to a forced labor camp and didn't allow my family to visit. Then, the evil ruffians even spread a false rumor saying that I didn't care about my family'.

Under Jiang's policy of "implication," the work unit was under pressure and had to fire me. The authorities immediately spread a rumor that I did not want to work. They even sent me, a normal person, to a mental hospital and said I had a mental problem. Around February 2000, a local policeman, Ye Guohui, came to my work place, and using the excuse of wanting my help in an investigation, he forced me into Liujiaoting Mental Hospital in Wuhan City. I was illegally detained there for two months.

In February 2001, I was illegally sent to Hewan Forced Labor Camp. In the labor camp, I met a kind old man who was often seen sweeping the floor. Later, I learnt he was a Falun Dafa practitioner by the name of Peng Weisheng. One day, the police took him away and told him it was to see his son and his wife for the last time. Later, Peng told me his story. His son, Peng Min, also a practitioner, was tortured to death in a detention center. There were many wounds on his body by the time he was hospitalized on the verge of death. His wife (Peng Min's mother, a practitioner as well) said to the police, "I will sue you." And then police took her away. She was returned to the hospital, in a near-death state. There was blood all over the back of her head from an injury, and she soon passed away. Soon, CCTV Focal Point played a piece of news about a practitioner named Peng Min who committed suicide in a detention center, and his mother died of an untreatable disease. We questioned the police in the labor camp, "Haven't you said that CCTV would never lie?" They couldn't answer at all. Afraid of the news leaking out, they extended Peng's term and later transferred him to some other place.

In the labor camp, the police instigated drug offenders to torture practitioners using all kinds of inhuman ways. To force me to recite the prison rules, they deprived me of sleep and did not allow me to use the toilet. Later my stomach swelled so much that I couldn't bend at the waist. I excreted a large amount of blood in the toilet later. Due to my unwillingness to cooperate with them in doing labor work I was forced to face the wall and stand straight for long hours (The guards forced us to work for long hours to produce food in very poor sanitary conditions in order to profit themselves. This is against the law.) No one was allowed to talk to me. The torture lasted one week, one month, or even longer. In order to force me to participate in the "morning drill," they forced me to stand outside during the cold winter mornings wearing only thin clothes until the "morning drill" was finished. They tortured persons serving a long term with methods such as freezing, hunger, isolation, threats, sleep deprivation, and denial of toilet use to such an extent that it was beyond a person's physical limits.

After suffering such inhuman torture for 11 months, being a healthy young man before, I now had lower limbs that were numb, and severe pain and swelling in both feet. I couldn't asleep at night because the pain was so unbearable. I had a heartbeat disorder and my eyesight was blurred. Sometimes I had incontinence of excretion. I was so weak that I was unable to stand and had to climb around. Policeman Zhou Houshun said that I faked my illness and did not allow my family to visit me. He even told my mother, "If your son dies, it will be counted as suicide." The doctor in the labor camp said that I would only live for one week at most after checking me out.

Afraid I would die in the labor camp, they released me back to my family. I struggled for 21 days in the hospital and miraculously survived (the hospital didn't want to accept me at the beginning.) The doctor still couldn't describe clearly what exactly my problems were. The unusual internal damage caused a functional physical failure.

One day after I was released from the forced labor camp, a drug offender who had been in the same labor camp called me. He said he was moved to see how practitioners didn't retaliate after being beaten and scolded. He said he would quit drugs and try to be a good person, and he expressed interest in learning the exercises and studying the Fa.

In order to keep his job, local policeman Ye Guohui put me in the Liujiaoting Mental Hospital. Doctor Xiong Wei was in charge of my treatment. Almost every doctor and nurse knew I was innocent and did not try to give me any treatment. During a conversation, Doctor Xiong Wei asked me whether I still practiced Falun Gong. I told her "I do." Later, Xiong Wei deceived my mother and forced her to sign a document giving permission to treat me with large doses of medicine, with no responsibility from the hospital side if I had bad side effects (such as losing memory, mental collapse, clinical death). That night, I couldn't sleep. I had seen such severe treatment of a patient who suffered so much that he lost consciousness. If they insisted in doing this to me, I would face it with dignity. I would tell the scheme of Doctor Xiong to all other doctors and nurses in the hall of the hospital. Keeping such a thought, I didn't wait negatively. I clarified the truth to every doctor and my family members when they visited me. At night, one of my relatives called my mother and told her it was a trap. Finally, since my family firmly refused any hospital treatments be given to me, I was released.

Here, I call upon all kind and righteous people in the world. Please give us your righteous support and help to stop this evil persecution.

Enclosed is a letter to Huang Zhao's mother from Liu Ning

Aunt,

Greetings!

Upon hearing of Huang Zhao's death, I am extremely sad. Huang Zhao was my fianc¨¦. Since we were engaged two years ago, the relations between our two families have been very close. We didn't have a wedding ceremony, though, because both our ID's were impounded by the local police stations, and thus we could not get a marriage certificate.

Huang Zhao and I are both Falun Dafa disciples. We were arrested and incarcerated many times because we refused to give up our belief in Falun Gong. During the period when we were engaged, which was the latter half of 2002, the street community was having a "Study Class" (in essence, a brainwashing class). The street administrative personnel came to harass us many times, requesting that we attend the class. The last time Huang Zhao was arrested by the police, the forced labor camp refused to accept her because she was in poor health. I also suffered inhumane tortures in the forced labor camp and was receiving treatment at home at that time. How could we attend the so-called "Study Class" to subject ourselves to tortures? In fact, it is an incarceration to force Falun Gong practitioners to give up their belief by using cruel torture. Therefore, Huang Zhao and I decided to leave our hometown and go to another place to escape the persecution.

Because of the tortures I suffered for an extended period of time in the forced labor camp, I was so weak that I walked like an elderly person, even though I was a strong and healthy young man before I was sent to the labor camp. Also, my eyesight was very poor as a result of the tortures. It was even difficult for me to see the traffic lights clearly. Huang Zhao was also swollen all over, and appeared to be heavy-set after being held at the detention center for a long time. She used to be a beautiful and slim young girl. We spent quite some time at a relative's place in the countryside taking good care of ourselves to recover.

With the care of my relatives and Huang Zhao, my physical condition gradually improved. I decided to go back to Wuhan to look for a job. At the same time, we wanted to go to the Bureau of Civil Affairs to get a marriage certificate and prepare for our wedding.

It was exactly when we were preparing for our wedding and job hunting, that Jin Zhiping from Qiaokou District Police Department arrested us illegally on April 1, 2004. Huang Zhao was tortured to death on April 2. In order to appease the situation, the police transferred me to my mother on April 3, and asked my mother to lock me up at home, so as to stop me from revealing the crime they had committed. On April 9, I tried to climb out of the window to get out, and in the process broke both my legs. Later, I stayed at home to recover from the injury.

What Jin Zhiping and his gang of colleagues did to Huang Zhao and me was entirely illegal. In the first place, regarding Huang Zhao's death, Jin Zhiping said she committed suicide and he also lied about the time of Huang Zhao's death. Huang Zhao's family members were not notified until April 16. Jin Zhiping didn't provide any evidence showing that Huang Zhao had been sent to an emergency room (although Jin Zhiping claimed Huang Zhao had received emergency treatment at the First Hospital of Wuhan City). However, he claimed that the emergency medical care cost was 70,000 yuan, but did not provide any receipts or prescription papers. He couldn't even specify the name of a doctor. During the so-called "emergency treatment," none of the family members was notified. It wasn't until over ten days later that the family members were ordered to check Huang's body.

It was ridiculous that they claimed Huang Zhao committed suicide. Falun Gong practitioners do not kill lives, nor would we commit suicide. This is for sure. After Huang Zhao and I were arrested, we were handcuffed. To be more specific, both hands were cuffed. When we were sent to the Qiaokou District Police Department, I was restricted to a chair with both hands cuffed. Even when I went to the toilet, one of my hands was cuffed. I didn't have any personal freedom at all, nor could I move my hands at will. Moreover, several guards took turns monitoring me around the clock. They put my chair far away from any hard object and took away the only metal objects in my possession - my keys. Even the cup for drinking water was made of soft plastic.

Under such strict monitoring, even my smallest movement could not escape them. So how could Huang Zhao have even had a chance to commit suicide? Moreover, Huang Zhao and I were getting prepared to be married, so there was no reason that she wanted to commit suicide. For the past several years of the persecution of Falun Gong, Jiang's orders were exactly "Death of Falun Gong practitioners from beating is nothing and shall be counted as suicide." When I suffered tortures at the Hewan Forced Labor Camp, after a diagnosis, the doctor said I was dying. The deputy head of the second division, Zhou Houshun, told my mother in person, "If your son dies here, it will be counted as suicide." Jin Zhiping tried to cover up the fact that Huang Zhao was tortured to death by saying Huang Zhao "committed suicide." Actually, my mother asked a policeman inside the Qiaokou District Police Department how Huang Zhao had really died. The police answered, "Jin Zhiping said she committed suicide." Obviously, that policeman didn't confirm what Jin Zhiping had said.

With regard to the time when Huang Zhao passed away, it was before I was released. (It was on the afternoon of April 3 that my family members were notified to come and take me home.) Before I was released, when I was being interrogated at the police station, I told the police that I was in the process of a wedding preparation when the police asked me how I was doing recently. The police said abruptly, "It is too late." It was on April 2 or April 3 that the policeman said so. (We were arrested on April 1.) Therefore, Huang Zhao must have passed away on April 2. After Huang Zhao's death, they ordered my mother to take me home, and asked her to restrict my freedom and to block the circulation of any inside information. Jin Zhiping persecuted Huang Zhao to death and he didn't know how to deal with this. It was until April 16 that you were notified about Huang Zhao's death.

It's worth mentioning that they knew very clearly that Huang Zhao was my fianc¨¦. They knew that although we were engaged, we couldn't get a marriage certificate because our IDs were impounded by local police stations. They knew all these very well, but they forced me to admit that Huang Zhao and I were husband and wife. Jin Zhiping and other policemen deprived me of sleep for several days and kept talking to me. When I was exhausted and not very clear minded, they asked me to sign a written record that Huang Zhao and I were husband and wife. They also forcibly pressed my hand for a fingerprint on that record.

They did so in order to make allege that it was legal to arrest us and they cared about our personal lives. Then, why did they torture Huang Zhao to death? Why did they rob us of all our belongings, wedding preparation items, and all valuables which they have not returned until now? Why did they impound our IDs? My family members helped get new IDs for us, however Jin Zhiping impounded the replacement IDs. Why did they threaten us with the "Study Class" and force us to leave our hometown?

From the very beginning, everything they did was illegal. They didn't provide any warrant or identification when they arrested us, nor did they provide reasons for the arrest. When we asked them what their professions were, they refused to answer. (They were wearing plain clothes when they arrested us.) Later, as a remedy, the police prepared a so-called summons and went to my home. I refused to sign it. They forced my mother to sign my name. Obviously, it was illegal.

Jin Zhiping and his colleagues had carefully planned this abduction. More than ten people, men and women, came in several vans, sneaked into our building, kicked the door open and forcibly took us away. They tried to beat Huang Zhao, but I stopped them.

At the same time, they confiscated 2000 yuan in cash, our saving account, and electronics items (CD player, computer, etc.). They have n'ot returned this property to me.

They must be held responsible for Huang Zhao's death. During interrogations, they often extort confessions by means of torture. Often times, tortures that exceed one's physical limit for pain. The victim often dies as a result.

They impounded citizens' IDs, broke into a private residence and confiscated citizens' property, falsified evidence, arrested us illegally, extorted a confession by torture, and even tortured a person to death. As policemen, Jin Zhiping and his colleagues have severely damaged the image of public security organs and violated the constitution of the People's Republic of China and criminal law. They must be held responsible for what they have done according to criminal law!

Huang Zhao was tortured to death by Jin Zhiping and his colleagues. I don't know the details because I was not present. But there's one thing for sure. Huang Zhao did not commit suicide. Even while being tortured to death, Huang Zhao did not give up her belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance." She faced tremendously evil forces, yet had a determined belief. With such outstanding courage, how would she commit suicide? This was a lie fabricated by the murderers.

Those who were involved in the arrests were from the first division of the investigation department and Qiaokou District Police Department. They were responsible for keeping track of us and arresting us. It was the 610 Office that assigned the tasks to them. During the illegal arrests, personnel from both parties (police department and 610 Office) were present. There were more than ten people, with men and women, and Jin Zhiping was the leader. There was another man in his fifties. According to him, his name was "Li Jianzhong." A young policeman whom the other people called "driver" also showed up during the arrest as well as the interrogation. Jin Zhiping was their leader. A young policeman by the name of "Wang" was the one who forced me to give my fingerprints. According to him, he used to work at Yijiadun Street Police Station and was transferred to Qiaokou District Police Department.

Huang Zhao and I were arrested on April 1, 2004. Huang Zhao was forced into a van and I was forced into a van following that van. We were taken immediately to the Qiaokou District Police Department. Jin Zhiping was responsible for interrogation and he was the person directly responsible for Huang Zhao's death. He must be subjected to judiciary punishment for his numerous crimes.

Huang Zhao has passed away. Please take good care of yourself and restrain your grief. Huang Zhao was a great girl. She was 32 years old when she died. In her last days, she told me that she had a wish. She told me that her elder brother had been married and her younger brother was still at school, and she wanted to take care of you. Huang Zhao was a very filial daughter. If there was no persecution, she would be able to fulfill her wish.

Our suffering is just a miniature epitome of countless Falun Gong practitioners' suffering from Jiang's atrocities. In China, tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners are enduring such persecution at this very moment. They are forced to leave their hometowns, and forced to lose their loved ones.

I am extremely sad at Huang Zhao's death. It was an excruciating tragedy for your family as well. We hope the persecution will end soon, which is the only path to a prosperous and stable China.

I hope you and your family will take good care of yourselves!

Liu Ning
