(Clearwisdom.net) Sanhe City in Hebei Province is a small city with a small population. In 1999, it was officially said there were more than 3,000 Falun Gong practitioners there. It is just a rough estimate that since July 20, 1999, at least 41 practitioners were sent to forced labor camps. Hundreds of practitioners were detained and subjected to savage torture.

Practitioner Jia Xueyun from Qutou Village, Qixinzhuang Town, suffered cruel beatings for hours at a time at the hands of the deputy police department head Zhang Shanglin and his subordinates, because of her appeal for Falun Gong. Later she was transferred to a forced labor camp. Zhang Shanglin was in charge of a section that was directly responsible for organizing the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners. Jia Xueyun used to be very healthy from practicing Falun Gong. When the labor camp sent her back home, she had been mentally traumatized and was so emaciated that she weighed only a little over 30 kg [approximately 66 lbs]. At present, she is still recovering and is still unable to care for herself without assistance.

Practitioner Lu Chunfeng from Xiaohu Village, Yuanjiao Town, had a similar experience. She was detained in October 1999, and was sentenced to one and a half years of forced labor. She was also mentally traumatized in the forced labor camp. She too requires assistance to take care of herself.

Practitioner Xin Baodong from Nanguan Village, Xunyang Town had been sent to a forced labor camp. After he was released and came home, police still didn't stop harassing and threatening him. He had been arrested many times. In the spring of 2002, Xin Baodong was arrested again without any charge and detained at the city detention center. After being directed by the police guards, the criminal inmates in detention beat Xin so severely that he sustained eight broken ribs.

In the spring of 2003, after an unsuccessful attempt to arrest Xin Baodong and his wife Gao Shuying, personnel from the "610 Office" put them on a wanted list and offered a high monetary reward for their capture. The couple was unable to take care of their child and parents. Because Xin Baodong was continually persecuted, his mother became so frightened from the constant terror that she suffered paralysis. That summer, after suffering under a heavy burden of mental pressure and physical pain due to lack of medical care, his mother died in sorrow. Her eyes were still wide open when she passed away.

Just in Sanhe City alone, thousands of Falun Gong practitioners and thousands of families have become direct victims of the persecution and tens of thousands of people have been implicated by the authorities and also suffered persecution as indirect victims. The scale of the persecution against Falun Gong and the severity of the consequences are astonishing.

The personnel in Sanhe City who hold the main responsibility for persecuting Falun Gong are Sun Diangao, the city Party secretary; Li Zongyi, former deputy Party secretary and current head of the city people's congress committee; Liu Fuqiang, a former "610 Office" head (1) and current deputy head of the police department in charge of persecuting Falun Gong. Sun Diangao has publicly attacked and defamed Falun Gong practitioners in a variety of public events and political conferences. At the end of February 2004 he appeared on TV, attacking Dafa and spreading hatred to poison people's minds.
