Persecution Suffered by Falun Gong Practitioners in the Women's Prison of Heilongjiang Province

April 14, 2005

On November 28, 2003, fifty Falun Gong practitioners from the 5th ward were dragged into the male prisoners' yard. The practitioners were forced to stand in the cold wind, with a temperature of about -27 degrees Celsius (-16.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The policemen did not allow them to wear scarves or gloves. The policemen and criminals who were in charge of monitoring them took shifts of two hours. Among the practitioners, Ms. Xiao Ailing, Ms. Gu Yalong, Ms. Cheng Peiying, Ms. Li Ping, Ms. Liu Guihua, Ms. Ren Xiuying, and Ms. Du Guijie were considered organizers and forced to meet with the prison director. They were directly sent to the guardhouse and detained there for 33 days.

These practitioners' hands were handcuffed behind them all day long. The policemen didn't give them enough food. Every day they only had two meals, and all they got was corn paste and small pickles. The policemen didn't let them use the restroom, either. They were not allowed to go to bed before 10 p.m.

At 9 a.m. of November 28, the police first escorted Ms. Li Ping and Ms. Liu Guihua into the guardhouse. Because Ms. Li Ping refused the order to take off her clothes, policeman Cao took off all her clothes except her underwear, dressed her in prison clothes, handcuffed her, and fastened her to a metal circle on the floor. For the other six practitioners, the police took off all their clothes and put prison clothes on them, but left them shoeless. Ms. Gu Yalong didn't even have heavy pants on her, only a pair of underpants. After 10 p.m., the police let a criminal go in and bring her a pair of heavy pants. When policewoman Cao came inside, she said: "You all have to follow orders, and you are not allowed to do the double leg crossing exercise here." When the practitioners did not reply, she confronted the practitioners one by one. The practitioners remained silent, so she started slapping their faces one by one. Before they were brought to the guardhouse, the practitioners had been beaten already. Now their faces were swollen and covered with bruises, but Cao didn't let that stop her. After beating them, Cao put ankle shackles on Ms. Li Ping and Ms. Gu Yalong and hung them up by their feet. Cao had Ms. Liu Guihua stand in a pot of cold water and didn't allow her to get out until she had warmed up the cold water with her bare feet. Cao had Ms. Ren Xiuying and Ms. Du Guijie stand on the cold cement floor and poured cold water on their feet. Cao handcuffed Ms. Xiao Ailing and Ms. Cheng Peiying behind their backs to a metal bar beside the restroom, forcing them to stay in a position where they couldn't sit down or stand up.

After one month, the seven practitioners held a hunger strike together, and the police force fed them. Three days later Ms. Gu Yalong had heart problems. Her blood pressure dropped to 30/60. Because of this, and also because New Year's Eve of 2004 was approaching, the police released them back to their prison room. They were then handcuffed to their bed frames for 18 days. At night they were forced to stand until midnight and were monitored by 2 criminals. When their feet were so swollen that they couldn't stand anymore, they were forced to sit on small benches and their hands were handcuffed behind them. The police only sent enough food for four people to the seven practitioners. On February 6, 2005, when the criminals Han Xiaojie and Jiao Yunjie asked for instruction, Wu Yanjie, the director of the division, finally ordered the removal of the practitioners' handcuffs. The persecution of the seven practitioners lasted for half a year.
