In a Few Words: Doing Things without Pursuing Them

April 2, 2006

(Clearwisdom.net) I heard a story in which once there was a treasure stone that needed one thousand hammer strikes to smash it open, but no one knew that. Many people pounded the stone several times and then left, and the stone was not even cracked. The last person smashed the rock with only a light hit and it cracked open.

I used to feel sad because the effect of my clarifying the truth was not that good, and hardly any people did the "three withdraws" after my efforts (withdrawing from the Chinese Communist Party, the Communist Youth League and the Young Pioneers). After listening to this story, I enlightened to the fact that there have to be many people doing those things, nine hundred and ninety-nine times. It is not important if I am the person to hit the one-thousandth hit. We should not feel discouraged even if the result was not good at the moment, as long as we did what we should do wholeheartedly.
