After the persecution started, local policemen and 610 Office agents often harassed and threatened him, forcing him go to Pudong District, Shanghai City to work. A year later, he went to another factory in Shunde District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province for about one year, but never returned home.

After September 2002, Mr. Ruan Peiji lost contact with his family. His wife went to Shunde District to look for him, and discovered that his clothes, bedding, and several hundred yuan in cash were still in his dorm.
