On the morning of August 7, 2007, Falun Dafa practitioner Sun Yajuan and her eight-year-old daughter went to the Wuzhong Prison to ask why the illegal imprisonment of her husband Ma Zhiwu had been extended. Sun also wanted to see her husband. Ms. Sun and Mr. Ma are from Yinchuan City in Ningxia Province.

Sun Yajuan was pregnant when Ma Zhiwu was illegally arrested. Eight years have passed and Ma Zhiwu's illegal sentence was near its end. Sun and her daughter have anxiously awaited this family reunion for eight long years. The Wuzhong Prison, however, called Ms. Sun in March to say that Mr. Ma refused to be "transformed," and therefore his sentence was extended by two months. Ms. Sun talked to Yin Zineng, the head of the Education Department in the Wuzhong Prison and asked for an explanation. Ms. Sun clarified the facts of Falun Dafa to Yin. Having lost his conscience, Yin refused to listen to her and called security. Officers from the National Security Team of the Wuzhong Police Station illegally arrested Sun Yajuan and her daughter. Police took Ms. Sun and her daughter back in the evening, and illegally searched her home and confiscated her property.

Ma Zhiwu is thirty-seven years old. He started to practice Falun Dafa in 1996. He was a staffer in the railroad sub-bureau in Yinchuan City. In early September 1999, Mr. Ma went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. When he was illegally detained at the Yinchuan Detention Center, he continued to practice Falun Gong. Police assaulted him, cuffed his hands behind the back and hung him by the cuffs, and put heavy shackles on him. Mr. Ma was illegally sentenced to a forced labor camp for three years. In October 2001, he went on a hunger strike in protest. He was then sentenced to six years in prison.

During the eight years of illegal imprisonment, police instigated criminals to beat Ma Zhiwu. He suffered all kinds of torture. He was brutally beaten numerous times by policemen and inmates using leather tubes, pick ax handles, rubber batons and electric batons. He was deprived of sleep for two weeks. Other tortures include two months of hanging with his hands cuffed behind the back, sitting on a tiger bench, baking under the hot sun for long periods of time, bricks tied around the neck, sand bags tied to the legs, shackles, and violent force-feeding. Ma Zhiwu went on numerous hunger and water strikes to protest the persecution.

Police in the Wuzhong Prison offered incentives and sentence reductions to inmates who helped to torture Ma Zhiwu. According to what the released prisoners said, in less than a year, the inmates thrashed Ma Zhiwu at least four times. To cover up their crimes, camp authorities prohibited Mr. Ma's family from visiting him for the past two years. They also used threats to keep prisoners that were about to be released from "leaking prison secrets." Authorities also made sure that inmates from Yinchuan City, Mr. Ma's hometown, did not see Mr. Ma.

In the past eight years, Sun Yajuan had to bring up her daughter by herself. She wasn't allowed to visit her husband. She was hard-pressed to provide for herself and their daughter. Local authorities often illegally searched their home. To force Ms. Sun to renounce Falun Gong, police from the West Garden Station in Yinchuan City abducted her daughter, two years old at the time, on November 20, 2001. Police then demanded Ms. Sun to stop practicing Falun Gong in exchange for her daughter.

For two years, Ms. Sun went back and forth many times between Wuzhong Prison and the Yinchuan Prison Management Bureau, but her requests to see her husband were all denied without explanation. Their daughter saw her father only a few times in prison in eight years.

Please help Ma Zhiwu and his family.
