A Piano Teacher's Temperament Changes for the Better

Oct. 11, 2008 |   By Li Huirong

(Clearwisdom.net) In Chinese, we call a woman who has a sharp, irritable temper "the eldest daughter in a wealthy family." About three years ago, Ms. Lai Cuifen, who teaches piano in southern Taiwan, was the epitome of this expression. Before she started practicing Falun Gong, she was notorious for throwing temper tantrums in front of her students. When she started to practice Falun Gong with her parents and younger brother, she underwent a huge transformation in her temperament and behavior.

In 1999, Ms. Lai's mother started practicing Falun Gong. After a short while, her mother, who had suffered from gynecological problems and depended on medication for many years, became perfectly healthy. After having experienced the benefits of Falun Gong, she invited her family to join her. At first, Cuifen was somewhat resistant to the idea, but she agreed to read the Falun Gong books about a year and a half later.

Ms. Lai was spoiled as a child and liked buying trendy clothes and designer brands. It was a natural part of her life. According to her, she would spend a full day of shopping without a second thought. Now she no longer fervently pursues fashion, and she thinks that happiness comes from a contented heart. She has adopted a new philosophy of living a simple life.

After graduating from Tainan University of Technology, Ms. Lai started to give piano lessons. It has been nearly 20 years since she first started teaching, and her transformation has been reflected in her interaction with her students. In the past, her students would sit on the edge of their seats, afraid of her outbursts. Nowadays, her students often greet her with a warm hug.

When Ms. Lai first started teaching, she frequently lost her temper. She didn't think that her job was important and had very little interest in doing it well. After she started practicing Falun Gong, she realized that one must be thoughtful of others. Once she started to do that, she realized that she wouldn't be mad all the time as long as she was willing to consider things from the perspective of her students.

She realized that a teacher can have a significant impact on students' interests and progress. With that in mind, she now often reminds herself to expand her kindness, patience, and tolerance for her students. When students do not perform well in class or neglect piano practice, Ms. Lai does not scold them. She also reflects upon herself to identify anything she might have done better in her teaching.

After she started practicing Falun Gong, she started paying special attention to her students' character, doing things to help them grow as people as well as musicians. After over a decade of teaching experiences and xinxing tests since she started practicing Falun Gong, she has realized that only when she thinks of the students from the bottom of her heart will she be providing the best lessons that she can.

Ms. Lai said, "I used to have a very leisurely life. To be honest, I was obsessed with materialism. I didn't know how to live. I didn't know a person was capable of pursuing the meaning of life."
