A recent research report revealed that meditation can reduce the mortality rate by half for those who have sudden heart attacks and strokes.
Wisconsin Medical College researchers conducted a study of 201 male and female patients. Their average age was 59 years old, and they had suffered from narrowing of the heart blood vessels for over 9 years.
The group was divided into two. One was treated with meditation along with normal treatment, the other with diet and exercise guidance.
The researchers discovered that those who meditated suffered only 470f the normal mortality rate of those who experience sudden heart attacks and strokes. For those who stated they enjoyed meditation and who worked under pressure, the results were even more dramatic. In this group, the mortality rate dropped by 67%.
The researchers pointed out that the effectiveness of meditation is comparable to medical treatment, and even better. A previous research article showed that meditation can also lower one's blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as increase one's sensitivity to insulin and resistance to hardening of the arteries. This most recent study demonstrates even more clearly that meditation can reduce the mortality rate of heart attacks and strokes.
This study focused on African Americans; however, the authors believe the results would be similar for other ethnic groups. Heart disease causes the most mortality among all illnesses.
