(Minghui.org) Mr. Jiang Guanmin and Mr. Li Yunzhao were illegally arrested by police while they were clarifying the facts about Falun Gong to people in Qingdao City on the afternoon of June 27, 2011. They were held at Qingdao No. 1 Detention Center. On November 3, 2011, Licang District Court sentenced both practitioners to five years in prison; their families were not notified of the trial.
Mr. Jiang Guanmin and family persecuted for over a decade
Mr. Jiang, 56, was an instructor in the Qingdao Shengsi Management Company. Before the Chinese Communist Party started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, he had been a deputy director of the Wennan Mine, affiliated with the Xinwen Mine Corporation in Shandong Province. After the onset of the persecution he was forced to resign.
In 2001, Xinwen Mine Co. 610 Office agents and Taiwen Police Department officials detained Mr. Jiang and his wife, Ms. Sun Yunhua. The couple were forced to undergo brainwashing in the Zibo City Wangcun Labor Camp for a month. Ms. Sun’s health was greatly damaged due to the mistreatment in detention, and she began to suffer from diabetes and heart disease. Later on, the couple moved to Qingdao City to escape the constant police harassment.
After Mr. Jiang’s son, a non-practitioner, graduated from college, Mr. Jiang applied for a job on behalf of his son with the Xinwen Mine Co., but the management there told Mr. Jiang that he would have to sign a guarantee statement to stop practicing Falun Gong before they would consider his son’s employment. Mr. Jiang refused, and his son was not hired.
Mr. Jiang eventually helped his son to start up the Shengsi Management Company, and he worked there as an instructor. Just when the family settled down, Mr. Jiang’s wife died in 2007, after years of battling diabetes and heart disease induced as a result of the persecution.
Mr. Li Yunzhao repeatedly persecuted for his faith
Mr. Li Yunzhao, 39, was a teacher at the Xiezhuang Mine Elementary School affiliated with the Xinwen Mine Co. and a resident of the Licang District in Qingdao City. Previously, he had been detained for a month for appealing for the right to practice Falun Gong. He was handcuffed, chained to a tree and subjected to police beatings with a rubber baton.
On the afternoon of August 22, 2006, nine police officers from the Xiezhuang Police Station and the Taiwen Police Department came to Mr. Li’s house and began to ransack it. Mr. Li’s wife tried to stop them, but the officers handcuffed her and dragged her out of the house. The couple's six-year-old boy cried from fright. The police officers confiscated a desktop computer, a laptop, a camera, 3 flash drives, Falun Gong books and copies of the Minghui Weekly. Mr. Li escaped from the police and went into hiding.
Mr. Jiang Guanmin and Mr. Li Yunzhao sentenced to prison in 2011
In the afternoon of June 27, 2011, Mr. Jiang and Mr. Li drove to a roadside spot in Qingdao City to send instant messages to people to clarify the facts about Falun Gong. Qingdao City police agents arrested them. They confiscated Mr. Jiang’s car, a laptop and three cell phones. Subsequently, the police also ransacked their homes, confiscating Falun Gong books and informational materials, cassettes, copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party and NTDTV Chinese New Year's Gala DVDs from Mr. Jiang's home, as well as Falun Gong books and materials from Mr. Li's home. Despite their obvious positive content, these materials became “criminal evidence” in the eyes of the police.
The police interrogated the two practitioners for two days and charged them with “instigating people to sabotage the state power.” Two days later, on June 29, 2011, the practitioners were sent to the Qingdao No.1 Detention Center.
Mr. Li’s wife did not receive any official notice until she saw a detention warrant from the Wenxi Police Station a month later, on July 27, 2011. She hired a lawyer to defend her husband. When the lawyer wanted to visit Mr. Li in the Qingdao center on October 12, 2011, he was denied entry. Finally, the lawyer withdrew from the case due to the escalating pressure from the authorities.
On November 3, 2011, the Licang District Court convened a trial without informing the practitioners' families. The court sentenced both men to five-year prison terms. Mr. Jiang and Mr. Li immediately appealed. Four months later, in the morning of March 2, 2012, Mr. Li’s wife called the Qingdao Intermediate Court to inquire about Mr. Li’s appeal. “You will hear something within a week,” she was told. In the afternoon, the court clerk called her back and said, “Li Yunzhao’s sentence has been upheld.”
