Finance Manager on Hunger Strike to Protest Illegal Detention

Aug. 30, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Tianjin, China

(Minghui.org) When practitioners of Falun Gong are unlawfully arrested and incarcerated in China simply because of their belief, some of them protest the injustice by conducting a hunger strike.

Hunger Strike in Prison

Mr. Ma Jian has been on hunger strike for months to protest his incarceration in the Binhai Prison in Tianjin. He is being force-fed through a tube inserted into his nose. The tube is not removed after force-feeding, and he is made to do heavy labor with the feeding tube still in his nose.

Mr. Ma was taken to the Binhai Prison in March 2014 after being illegally sentenced to six years. He was arrested in March 2013 because he produced informational materials about Falun Gong and to expose the persecution.

Torture re-enactment: Force-feeding

Repeatedly Arrested

Mr. Ma, 46, was a finance manager at the Zhonghuan Electronics Company. He has been repeatedly arrested since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999.

In 2000, Mr. Ma was arrested for producing Falun Gong materials. He was incarcerated and tortured in the Gangbei Prison (now called Binhai Prison) for four years.

Not long after his release from prison in 2004, Mr. Ma was arrested again when he appealed to the authorities to stop persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. He was detained in the Shuangkou Forced Labor Camp for two years. While in detention, he went on a hunger strike to protest the torture. The hunger strike lasted for one year.

When Mr. Ma was released in 2006, he weighed less than 90 pounds and his voice was hoarse, possibly a result of the forced feeding.

Mr. Ma's health gradually improved after he started practicing the Falun Gong exercises again.
