Liaoning Woman Informed of Six-Year Prison Sentence One Day Before Appeal Deadline

Oct. 8, 2015 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Fang Hailing, from Liaoning Province, was sentenced to six years in prison on August 28, 2015.

Ms. Fang was arrested on April 28, 2015 for telling people about the persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual discipline. She is being held in the Xidayingzi Detention Center in Chaoyang Prefecture, Liaoning Province.

Chinese law requires that an appeal must be filed within 10 days after the judgment is given. The court staff mailed the sentence papers to Ms. Fang's lawyer, instead of notifying her family or her lawyer as soon as the sentencing was rendered. As a result, none of them knew about it until September 6 - the day before the appeal deadline.

Ms. Fang managed to complete the appeal document, and her husband delivered it to the court on the September 7 deadline.

The trial was held on July 28. Her lawyer had pleaded “not guilty” for his client, arguing that the persecution was, in fact, illegal, but a month later the court issued the six-year prison sentence.
