Woman Deceived into Signing Falsified Documents After Being Sentenced Without Legal Representation

April 8, 2015 |   By a Minghui correspondence in Yunnan Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 69-year-old woman from Kunming City was denied legal representation and sentenced to four years on trumped-up charges last July for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual practice being persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party. The trial lasted all of 30 minutes.

Ms. Yin Shuyuan soon filed an appeal, only to be deceived into signing a document incriminating herself while awaiting a hearing by the higher court.

Ms. Yin was tried in Xishan District Court on April 9 last year following her arrest on September 9, 2013. The key prosecution evidence was a police-produced list of confiscated items, including more than 400 DVDs and hundreds of copies of Falun Gong fliers, allegedly from her home.

Ms. Yin objected to the falsified evidence, as she only owned 20 DVDs bearing information about the persecution of Falun Gong. She further questioned how her lawful possession of DVDs could be labeled as “sabotaging law enforcement,” which was met with silence from the prosecution.

Ms. Yin was given a four-year sentence three months after the trial, and she later hired a lawyer for her appeal.

In the meantime, the lower court sent in staff to the detention center and deceived Ms. Yin into signing a document without allowing her to review the contents first. Only after putting her name down did she realize that the document contained newly falsified evidence against herself.
