Guangdong Mother Detained at Brainwashing Center, Denied Visits with Family and Lawyers

Dec. 29, 2016 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Guangdong Province

(Minghui.org) A young mother was visiting her in-laws in Fujian Province on July 29, 2016 when she and her two-year-old daughter were arrested and taken back to Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, where they live.

Ms. Lu Chunxia was targeted because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.

Her little girl was released to her family one week later, but she remains captive at Guangzhou City Brainwashing Center.

One of Ms. Lu’s lawyers, Mr. Fan Biaowen, visited the brainwashing center on August 10, but was turned away. He and another lawyer, Mr. Zhang Zanning, tried again the next day, only to be denied visits for a second time.

Both lawyers and their respective law firms were later threatened by the Guangzhou City Judicial Bureau, which tried, unsuccessfully, to stop the lawyers from representing Ms. Lu.

Ms. Lu’s family has been kept in the dark on her detention status and denied visitation. They are extremely concerned about her well-being, especially given the fact that this brainwashing center is a place specifically designed to detain Falun Gong practitioners who are steadfast in their belief.

Established in April 2001, the brainwashing center receives funding from Guangzhou City Judicial Bureau and is staffed by police officers. More than 300 Guangdong practitioners have been detained there at one point over the years. Many were tortured to the point of suffering permanent mental and physical damage.

The brainwashing center staff members are given various rewards for their efforts to try to make detained practitioners give up their belief in Falun Gong.
