75-Year-Old Woman Appeals 3-Year Prison Term

March 1, 2016 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) Police officers in Dandong City arrested Ms. Yu Chuanfang on April 25, 2015, for handing out Falun Gong fliers. They ransacked her home and confiscated her cash and Falun Gong books. She was released after her son posted bail.

The police ordered Ms. Yu to come to the police station in May and sign the transcript of a deposition, charging her with committing certain crimes. She refused.

The local procuratorate informed her that she was officially arrested and tried to admit her to a detention center three days later. The detention center refused to accept her after a hospital exam showed that she had cardiovascular problems.

With no advance notice, Ms. Yu was tried in the local district on August 21, 2015. There was not enough time to hire a lawyer and only one family member and two court officers were present. The trial ended without a verdict. However, the judge handed down a three-year prison sentence on November 18, 2015.

She has hired a lawyer and filed an appeal with the Dandong City Intermediate Court.
