(Minghui.org) A Tonghua City resident has been on a hunger strike since late May to protest her detention for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.
Ms. Yan Shufang was force-fed and is now in dire condition.
She was outside her apartment building on April 24 of this year when three plainclothes officers knocked her over and dragged her on the ground for more than 100 meters. Her pants, shoes, and socks fell off during her struggle.
The officers drove her to Laozhan Police Station, where they poured cold water on her face during interrogation. She was transferred to Tonghua City Detention Center later that night.
The police moved Ms. Yan to a hotel room on May 13 to conduct marathon interrogation sessions. For five straight days, she wasn’t allowed to sleep and was frequently beaten. Her request for a lawyer was denied.
She soon developed abnormal symptoms, with her blood pressure shooting up to 180 mmHg. Police sent her to a hospital after Yanji City Detention Center declined to admit her, citing her health condition. However, she was admitted on May 20 after recovering slightly.
Ms. Yan wrote a complaint against the police for infringing upon her constitutional right to freedom of belief and physically abusing her, but the detention center refused to mail the document.
She went on a hunger strike in protest and was force-fed on multiple occasions.
