The Difference Between Knowing and Understanding

Jan. 6, 2018 |   By a Falun Gong practitioner in Liaoning, China

(Minghui.org) A few practitioners that were not so old passed away from illness karma several years ago. A common feature among them was that they said they knew the principles of Master Li's teachings when practitioners went to send righteous thoughts and to help them. This made the practitioners on site feel helpless. One practitioner said, “She knows more than us.”

I have now enlightened that knowing does not equate to understanding. I recited many ancient poems when I was young, but I still don't know all of the poems' connotations.

Knowing is different from understanding, but people, including practitioners, easily take these two words to be the same. For example, some people managed to dodge disasters by reciting “Falun Dafa is great” as they knew the connotations of it. For others who ran into disasters, they may have known the words “Falun Dafa is great” too, but did not truly believe the words. The reason for not believing is that they were misled by the Chinese Communist Party and refused to learn about Falun Gong in depth.

Master asked us to clarify the truth to the public. Clarifying the truth does not merely mean telling people the facts. I enlightened that the difference between knowing and understanding is essential for sentient beings to be saved.
