Seriously Ill Man Denied Medical Parole and Jailed for His Faith

Dec. 8, 2018 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Heilongjiang Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Falun Gong practitioner was rushed to the hospital five months after he was arrested for his faith, and his doctor warned that he may go into shock at any time. Despite his health condition, he was denied medical parole and made to stand trial.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Mr. Gao Fuzhi, 61, was sentenced to three years in prison with a 15,000 yuan fine on November 5, 2018, by Yilan County Court. He has recently started to serve time at Shuangyashan Prison.

The police had begun to harass Mr. Gao in the “knocking on doors” campaign prior to the communist party's 19th Congress between October 18 and 24, 2017. They became increasingly upset when Mr. Gao refused to succumb to the harassment, and instead gave them a flyer about how they have violated the law in harassing Falun Gong practitioners in the campaign.

Shortly after the Party Congress ended, the police arrested Mr. Gao at his residence in Bayan County on November 9, 2017, and sent him to Bayan County Detention Center, where he developed inflammation in his pancreas and gallbladder, as well as gallstone and cerebrovascular disease.

When the detention center guards sent Mr. Gao to Bayan County People's Hospital on April 6, 2018, they shackled his feet to the bed and placed him in a separate room at the far end of the east wing on the 7th floor in the hospital. A surveillance camera was installed above his bed and the guards took turns watching him.

The attending physician said that Mr. Gao may lose consciousness at any time. But Yu Haiyan, the head of Bayan County Domestic Security Division, said to Mr. Gao's family that it was impossible for them to release Mr. Gao, and that they would continue to interrogate him to try to obtain information about other Falun Gong practitioners.

It was reported that the police didn't find anything related to Falun Gong at Mr. Gao's home when arresting him, so they returned to his home several times after his arrest in order to find “supporting evidence” to charge him. The DVDs of his child's wedding were also taken away by the police.

Mr. Gao's wife, who has been suffering from severe rheumatism in her hands and feet and unable to take care of herself, was traumatized by the police's harassment and home raid. She became mentally unstable and didn't dare to stay home by herself.

Despite the lack of evidence, the police submitted Mr. Gao's case to the procuratorate, with the charge of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization,” a standard pretext used by the communist regime to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners.

Yilan County Court held a hearing of his case on July 19 and announced a guilty verdict against him on November 5.
