Two Shanghai Women Face Prison Time Again for Their Faith in Falun Gong

Jan. 29, 2019 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Shanghai, China

(Minghui.org) Two Shanghai residents have been detained for nine months for using banknotes printed with information about Falun Gong, a mind-body discipline persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Hua Liping and Ms. Liu Fendi were arrested on April 24, 2018, while shopping for shoes at Zhoupu Town with nine 20-yuan bills. The procuratorate approved their arrests on May 30. They have been detained in the Pudong New District Detention Center ever since.

They are now facing further prosecution after the Pudong Procuratorate forwarded their cases to the Fengxian District Court.

This is the fifth time that Ms. Hua, 60, has been arrested for her faith in Falun Gong. She was given a three-year sentence in 2004 for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. She was forced to do manual labor and subjected to intensive brainwashing and mistreatment at Songjiang Women's Prison.

Her employer, Yangpu Tobacco Company, fired her and withheld her benefits after she was released on June 8, 2007.

Unable to bear the pressure from the persecution, her husband divorced her. Her sister passed away two months later after living in fear and anxiety for years.

Both Ms. Hua's parents are now in their 80s. Her mother has lost her eyesight due to diabetes. Her father had to have heart surgery. They are now left unattended after Ms. Hua, their main caregiver, was arrested.

Ms. Liu, 70, has also been repeatedly targeted for her faith in the past 20 years. She was sentenced to three years with three years of probation in 2002 and then sentenced to another five years in 2004. Her husband suffered from a stroke due to the mental distress of her imprisonment. He became bedridden and moved to an assisted living center.
