Being a Steadfast Practitioner While Detained

It was three days before New Year’s Day, and I wanted to distribute more information about Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong), because I wouldn’t have time during the holiday. By thinking this way, I had turned this sacred task for Dafa into a routine without righteous thoughts. It did not take long for a security guard to seize me and call the police. I told the practitioner who accompanied me to quickly leave.

I started to clarify the truth about Dafa to the guard. It was eight p.m. and I was in a small park, but dozens of people gathered around, and everyone was listening. The police did not show up until two hours later, after I had finished explaining the facts about Dafa. The police station was only a few minutes' walk.

At the station an officer asked me where I’d gotten the Dafa materials. They interrogated me throughout the night. The next day they took me to a detention center, which was against the rules because my blood pressure was dangerously high.

Master said,

“No matter what the situation, do not cooperate with the evil’s demands, orders, or what it instigates.” (“Dafa Disciples’ Righteous Thoughts are Powerful,”  Essentials for Further Advancement II)

When the guards ordered me to repeat the detention center rules, I recited “On Dafa ( Lunyu).” I also spit out the drugs they fed me.

I stayed in the first cell for five days and helped five people quit the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In the next cell I helped nine out of 13 inmates quit the Party in 19 days. I paid attention to my attitude and image. I purchased extra daily necessities and shared with those in need.

The head in the second cell was a girl in her 20s who’d sentenced to 15 years for getting into a fight. She was very sad, and I often talked to her about Dafa, telling her, “Things will change for the better once you believe that Falun Dafa is good.” She agreed with me and was very nice to me. She would share rare treats with me such as peanuts and eggs.

I was supposed to spend two years in a forced labor camp but was allowed to serve my time outside the camp after spending 24 days in the detention center. Even a guard was in disbelief. Before I left, I reminded the young girl, “Believe in Falun Dafa and you will get help when you need it.” I promised to send her money and warm clothes.

A few days later I had my daughter bring the girl what I’d promised. But my daughter was told that the girl had been released the day after I was! I located her and brought her my gifts. She was so touched she cried and said, “I now realize just how kind Falun Gong practitioners really are.”

Faced with Sickness Karma

I came down with a frozen shoulder and couldn’t lift my arm. It was inconvenient when I handed out fliers. I begged Master for it to recover quickly, so I could get on with the Dafa work. My shoulder was fine the next day.

I stepped outside one morning after a light snow and slipped. I fell flat on the ground and thought that I had injured my internal organs.

When the pain was almost unbearable, I remembered what Master said,

“We believe that one thought can determine the outcome of things, for better or for worse.” (The Fourth Talk,  Zhuan Falun)

I told Master that, no matter what notions I had, I would rectify myself with the Fa: “I will not allow the evil forces to use any excuse to persecute me.” I managed to get back into the house, and my husband helped me lay down. It hurt too much to move. I frequently sent righteous thoughts and began to listen to Master’s lectures when I couldn’t sleep.

The next day, other practitioners came to help me. My husband urged me to see a doctor but I told him, “If I went to the hospital, I’d never get up again. I will be fine in a few days.”

I slept very little each day and used all the time to listen to or read the Fa. I looked within and remembered what I’d done a few days before to my son-in-law. I clarified the truth to him, but instead of listening, he slandered Dafa. I was so angry that I scolded him. My lack of compassion and tolerance were being exploited.

Once I had acknowledged my shortcomings, I could feel that I started to recover. The next day I could get up and do the first exercise. It took me over an hour and I was covered in sweat. I was able to sleep that night! The day after, I did the second exercise. When I was about to do the third and fourth exercises the day after, I doubted if I could bend down. Master said:

“Nothing is truly unbearable or impossible.” (The Ninth Talk,  Zhuan Falun)

I tried and could do the fourth exercise! After 10 days I could walk on my own and completely recovered in two weeks. My husband commented, “It’s amazing that you recovered so fast. An ordinary person would be bedridden or could even have died.”

One day I noticed blood in my urine, and my lower back began to hurt. The pain was so excruciating that I couldn’t get up. The next day I had a high fever and lost my appetite. My husband insisted that I go to a doctor, but I refused to go, and said, “Once I find out what I did wrong and correct it, I’ll be fine. Master will take care of me. The hospital wouldn’t be able to help me.”

Master said,

“We all know that we are cultivating. Since it’s cultivation, nothing on our path of cultivation is coincidental.” ( Teaching the Fa at the Conference in New Zealand)

I looked within carefully. It came to me that after one incident, my husband was scared of the persecution and didn’t want me to go out to clarify the truth. Interfered with by fear, and love for my husband, I slowly slacked off.

I promised Master that, after I recovered, I would do well so that he wouldn’t have to worry about me. The next day I had an appetite and was able to keep the food down. It took two weeks to recover. As I promised, I returned to clarify the truth immediately.

We must look within when we come down with a sickness. Then, we must make changes when we find out what the problem is, or it won’t have helped with the situation.

Clarifying the Truth Overseas

I sometimes travel overseas to visit a relative. What I remember the most was calling China and going to tourist sites to clarify the truth to other Chinese.

Once I helped 200 people quit the CCP on phone calls to China. I called a student at Jilin University and talked to him about the persecution for half an hour. I reminded him, “I am doing this for you so you will be safe when you face problems.” The student quit the CCP. I asked him, “Where are the others in your dorm? Would you ask them to come, so I can talk to them, too?” Over the phone I heard many saying, “It’s not necessary, Granny. We’ve all heard you and will quit the CCP.” Six of them quit with their real names. They didn’t want to hang up, admitting that they were happy to hear me talk.

Another time I talked to a middle school principal. He was reluctant to talk and told me that he was a Christian. I said that it didn’t matter, “I want you to be safe in times of trouble. Falun Gong is a Buddhist practice that is being persecuted by the CCP. Many good people have died as a result. If you are a Party member, you are implicated in its crimes. Only by quitting will you not be implicated when the Party incurs retribution.” He still had concerns, “My son is going to college next year and I don’t want to damage his future.” I told him it would help his son, and he could quit anonymously. Both he and his wife quit the CCP.

When I clarified the truth at tourist sites and university campuses, I helped hundreds of Chinese students quit. Most of the students held simple thoughts and notions, and could easily accept what I said. At a graduation ceremony, I talked to seven students sitting together. They were skeptical at first and had many doubts about the practice. I answered every one of their questions as they listened attentively. All of them quit the CCP and its youth organization.

When I tried to talk about Dafa to a Chinese tourist at a scenic spot, she snapped, “I don’t want to hear it!” She then slandered Dafa. I raised my hand and said, “Quitting or not, I don’t want you to commit a crime. If you are disrespectful to the divinities, you risk punishment.” After I told her about the persecution, she calmed down and apologized. “Now I know what Falun Gong is. Please help me quit.” She thanked me before she left.

I came across four youngsters in a park, who wouldn’t stop cursing as I explained the facts to them. I said as much as I could until they stopped listening. A few days later I saw them again. This time they were completely different. “We thought about it. Please help us quit the CCP,” they said. When I asked them what they did for a living, one said, “You seem nice, so I’ll be honest with you. We deal in drugs in China and then came here.” He asked, “Granny, will Falun Dafa protect us after we quit the CCP?” I told him, “Definitely not, because you ask for protection to commit crimes.” I explained that they would be protected and their fate would change if they earned an honest living. They all quit.

Master said,

“Compassion can harmonize Heaven and Earth, ushering in spring
Righteous thoughts can save the people in this world”
(“The Fa Rectifies the Cosmos,” Hong Yin Vol. II)

Writing the Facts on Paper Bills

Once a person told me that he’d heard of Falun Gong because he saw the facts written on a paper bill. Master said,

“I think that's a terrific idea. (Applause) You can't throw away money, and you can't destroy it.” (Teaching the Fa in the City of Los Angeles)

I decided to do that and began with the vendors I knew in the market. I treated them with respect and got to know them. I then made purchases with paper bills that had messages printed on them and clarified the truth to the vendors when they were not busy. After they quit the CCP and agreed with Falun Dafa, they agreed to help me circulate the bills.

After a few times, they were rewarded, and good things happened to them. Every other week they’d ask if I remembered to bring them the printed bills. Most of the time I gave them 100 one-dollar bills, and more during the holidays.

Facing the Death of My Husband

For many years my husband was a great supporter of my clarifying the truth. He once stood up for me when officials tried to take me to a brainwashing center. An agent from the 610 Office came to apologize to him the next day. He would help practitioners in prison or those who were out of job because of the persecution and gave them goods or money. We were married for over 50 years and got along well.

His passing a few years ago almost destroyed me. Everything I saw reminded me of him. I asked Master to help me stop the interference. From then on, when I thought of him, I studied the Fa.

Gradually I let go of my sentiment and attachment to him. I didn’t want to leave the old forces any excuse to exploit my attachment. When considering what to put on his tombstone, I told my daughter not to leave a space for my name next to his. She cried. I asked her to respect my belief. On the day of his burial, I asked him to understand why I did what I did: “We will see each other in a much better place.”

I couldn’t have made it without Dafa. Now, I live in an apartment by myself and am happy and fulfilled.

It has been 23 years since I began to practice Dafa. Every day I continue to study the Fa, do the exercises, and try to better myself.
