Looking Inward While Doing Media Work

July 4, 2019 |   By a practitioner in New York City

(Minghui.org)

I work as a broadcaster at one of the media companies focused on clarifying the truth to Chinese people in mainland China. Over time, I noticed a lot of problems in our daily work. Some broadcasters didn't follow time schedules when signing in and out, others didn't follow the requirement to announce their names, still others didn't pay attention to pre-broadcasting checkup duties and thus made mistakes during the broadcast. Some editors repeatedly made mistakes in their articles, etc.

In the beginning, when I noticed some of the mistakes, I would point them out to people patiently. But I grew more and more impatient when mistakes were repeated. I was very unhappy and kept blaming others. I thought my actions were doing good, but then I suddenly realized that I was consistently looking outward and had forgotten to look within.

Master said:

“You should also be clear that ‘natural’ does not exist, and ‘the inevitable’ has reasons behind it.” (“Expounding on the Fa”, Essentials for Further Advancement )

“It would be good if they could manage to search within themselves for the things that they have been able to find in others.” (“A Dialogue with Time”, Essentials for Further Advancement )

I began looking inward and surprisingly found myself full of human attachments, such as selfishness, jealousy, the fighting mentality, seeking my own benefit, and others.

Master said:

“So you won’t see the truth of the universe if you don’t let go of those understandings from the society of ordinary people.” (“Teaching the Fa at the Conference in Switzerland”)

“Everything you are attached to is your obstacle. These tests that you come across in cultivation are in fact your own hardships. The point of my utilizing them is to open the locks of your attachments, to allow you to see the truth, and to have your mind elevate.” (“Teaching the Fa at the Conference in Switzerland”)

I saw that I was using ordinary people's standards to determine right and wrong. My strong human attachments caused me to focus on other people's mistakes, which was neither compassionate nor tolerant.

I sent righteous thoughts to clear my human notions. When I noticed other practitioners' mistakes, I didn't let myself have negative thoughts. If I could resolve the problem, I would just do it. If I could not, I would inform the team leader so she could handle it. Sometimes the team leader was busy and asked me to coordinate with others, I would go ahead without any complaints.

I also spent time listening to our live broadcast so I would learn from other broadcasters.

I read the Minghui website every day. From there I learned the cultivation stories of practitioners in China and looked inward to compare my cultivation with theirs.

Gradually, I become calmer when I saw other people's mistakes. For example, a practitioner mistakenly wrote the number 3250 billion as 325 billion in an article. I simply corrected it. I did not feel the need to blame the writer or editors. Instead, I thought of how hard my fellow practitioners had worked for our media. Whether they were full-time or volunteers, all had sacrificed so much. Some of the young practitioners gave up developing a career in ordinary society in order to help our media. From the bottom of my heart, I felt that they were all incredible!

One morning, I arrived at our exercise site earlier than usual. Three practitioners who arrived before me were picking up trash around the site before others came. I was very touched and thought of our media; so many practitioners had worked so hard for so many years. They had created such a positive atmosphere. Our media is now becoming mature and I am fortunate to be here. I shall treasure this time.

After I let many of my human notions dissipate, I became calmer and happier. In fact I do not see as many problems as I used to.

Master said:

“Since everyone has things that he is attached to, and everyone thinks that there is a truth in ordinary people’s society that he has come to know for himself, he then holds on to it to go on living his life. In fact, I would like to tell you that no matter what principles you have enlightened to among ordinary people, all of them are wrong in the eyes of beings at any level higher than mankind, since the entire human society is the opposite [of higher realms].” (“Teaching the Fa at the Western U.S. Fa Conference”)

I will remember that I am a cultivator and should not use ordinary people's notions to judge what I see. I shall truly follow the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.
