(Minghui.org) A 75-year-old man was sentenced to one year with a 10,000-yuan fine on October 27 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Liu Qinju of Hulin City, Heilongjiang Province, was arrested at home on July 12, 2020. His 16-year-old grandson, who happened to be present when the police came, was also arrested and taken to the police station. The police put a black hood over the boy’s head, which terrified him.
Mr. Liu was taken to a hospital for a physical exam and then interrogated at the Hongqi Police Station. He was released on bail in the evening and ordered to pay a 1,000-yuan bond the next day.
The police submitted Mr. Liu’s case to the Mishan County Procuratorate, accusing him of mailing 34 letters with information about Falun Gong between March and May 2020, according to the post office surveillance records.
Mr. Liu was taken back into custody in the Hulin City Detention Center on July 12, 2021, the last day of his one-year bail. He was indicted in August. With no advance notice, the police took him to the Mishan County Court for a hearing on October 15, 2021. No family members were allowed to attend. The judge prohibited Mr. Liu from defending himself and refused his request to play the surveillance recording used as prosecution evidence.
When Mr. Liu vowed to appeal the verdict after he was convicted on October 27, the judge threatened to invalidate the time he had served between July and October.
