(Minghui.org) A Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province resident was tried on July 2, 2022 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Neither Ms. Wei Shujie’s lawyer nor her family was notified of the hearing. Sentenced to four years in prison, she has filed an appeal.
Ms. Wei was arrested on February 25, 2020, after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. After three days at the police station, she was taken to a detention center but was denied admission due to an outbreak of Covid-19. The police then released her on bail.
Six months later, the police renewed Ms. Wei’s bail condition for another year. Because she refused to sign the paperwork, the police began to check on her every few days. Sometimes they called her husband to see if she's stayed home.
Ms. Wei was arrested when she returned from grocery shopping on September 22, 2020, and taken to the Harbin City No.2 Detention Center. Her family hired a lawyer for her and also tried to use their connections to rescue her, but the authorities refused to release her with the excuse that she didn’t “admit her mistake.”
Because Ms. Wei did the Falun Gong exercises in August 2021, she was beaten several times by the inmates.
The Daowai District Court held a virtual hearing of her case on September 5, 2021. The judge, Chen Fengyan, adjourned the session when Ms. Wei and her lawyer strongly demanded the session to be held in person.
The judge didn’t inform her lawyer or family of her second hearing on July 2, 2022. Ms. Wei attended through a video conference in the detention center. She was sentenced to four years at the end of the session.
