A Nanyang City, Henan Province resident was constantly harassed while serving a 1.5-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Mr. Li Wenran, a retired employee of Nanyang City Prison, passed away on January 25, 2022. He was 79.

Mr. Li was arrested on May 15, 2019, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong in a park. The police ransacked his home, confiscating his 206 Falun Gong books, 193 pieces of banknotes printed with information about Falun Gong (as a way to raise awareness about the persecution due to strict censorship in China), 90 Falun Gong amulets, 59 informational DVDs, 13 posters, 4 radios, 3 calendars with information about Falun Gong, 2 DVD machines, a flash-drive, and several other Falun Gong related materials. Due to his health condition, he was released on bail on the same day.

The police submitted Mr. Li’s case to the Tanghe County Procuratorate without informing him. The prosecutor indicted him on May 13, 2020, and moved his case to the Tanghe County Court.

Mr. Li was later sentenced to 1.5 years with a 3,000 yuan fine. Due to his poor health, he was allowed to serve time at home. Yet staff members from the residential committee and local police kept harassing him and ordered him to attend brainwashing sessions. Terrified by the persecution, Mr. Li’s health deteriorated and he passed away on January 25, 2022.

According to information collected by Minghui.org, at least five practitioners in Henan died in 2021 due to the persecution. Ninety practitioners were sentenced to prison, with at least 237 practitioners arrested and 95 harassed.
