How Falun Gong Practitioners in Guangdong Province Women’s Prison Are Tortured

Oct. 16, 2023 |   By a Falun Gong practitioner in Guangdong Province, China

(Minghui.org) Because I practice of Falun Gong, I was sentenced to one year in the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison. Below are the tortures I endured or witnessed during that time.

Physical Torture

When I was held in the admission ward, another practitioner was detained next door. The guards ordered her to admit that she was a criminal before allowing her to eat. She refused to comply and repeatedly said that she was a Falun Gong practitioner.

The guards ordered every practitioner to write “homework” to defame our faith. Those who didn’t would have their allotted sleep time reduced each day—by two hours on the first day the practitioner refused to do the “homework” and two more hours the next day if she was still uncooperative. In just a few days, a steadfast practitioner wouldn’t be allowed to sleep at all.

I was deprived of sleep and forced to stand overnight. If I was too tired, I could ask for permission to sit down for a while. The longest time I was deprived of sleep was 14 days. The inmates told me that one purpose of this torture was to make me muddle-headed. When I fell into a delirious state, they would grab my hand and force me to sign the statement to renounce Falun Gong. They also restricted how many showers I could take and for how long.

The guards didn’t allow practitioners who refused to renounce Falun Gong to wear warm clothes in the winter and then made them sit facing an open window for extended periods of time. Most of them weren’t told beforehand how long the abuse would last.

Unable to endure the cold, one practitioner shouted in the middle of the night, “They only let me wear thin clothes in such cold weather. They deprive me of sleep and pushed my head into a water bucket!” The inmate who was assigned to watch her said, “It’s your own fault because you didn’t admit that you were a criminal.” Several other inmates criticized the practitioner for waking them up.

The guards could order us to squat at any time. When I didn’t comply, six inmates would surround me and try to force me to squat.

Brainwashing

Most of us were held in the fourth team in the fourth ward called the “Study Group.” Each practitioner was confined in a small space and not allowed to move around at will. The guards sometimes appeared to be nice to us in order to gain our trust, but it was they who ordered the inmates to torture and “transform” us.

When it was time to read propaganda books or watch propaganda videos, the inmates, mostly drug dealers or prostitutes, would beat and verbally abuse us. Because I was able to point out the loopholes in the brainwashing materials they prepared, they eventually stopped making me read or watch them.

There was an inmate named Li Jing who had been in the prison for a very long time, The guards often had her torture us practitioners, because she was especially ruthless. In one form of torture she was in charge of, she only gave us practitioners 60 seconds to finish our meals. When the time was up, everyone had put down their spoons.

Another inmate, Liu Lihong, had been a police officer before, and she enjoyed special favors from the guards. She was also ruthless when it came to torturing people. She once forced a young person to squat for an extremely long time.
