(Minghui.org) A 73-year-old Xinyang City, Henan Province resident was recently sentenced to 4.5 years with a 10,000-yuan fine for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Yu Sufang was arrested on October 10, 2020 while riding a bike on the street. Her Falun Gong books and cellphone at home were confiscated. As she failed the physical examination required for detention center admission, she was released in the evening.
The police began to harass her again starting in October 2021. They also submitted her case to the procuratorate to pursue prosecution.
Ms. Yu was convicted by the Huangchuan County Court on March 30, 2023.
Ms. Yu took up Falun Gong in September 1998. Since the onset of the persecution in 1999, she has been repeatedly arrested for upholding her faith.
She went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in March 2000 and was arrested. After being held in a metal cage overnight, she was transferred back to Xinyang and detained for a month.
Ms. Yu was arrested again on October 3, 2005. Her TV and a DVD player were confiscated. She was held at the Hedian Detention Center for over a month. The 200 yuan in cash that she had with her was taken away by the guards. She was also extorted another 200 yuan.
Ms. Yu’s next arrest was in June 2006 for talking to people about Falun Gong at a community fair. She was later sentenced to 4 years in the Xinxiang Women’s Prison, where she was forced to work without pay and subjected to brainwashing and torture.
