(Minghui.org) When a Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, resident was released on June 26, 2023, after serving a nine-month term for practicing Falun Gong, her husband was shocked to see his once beautiful and healthy wife wheeled out of the local prison hospital, where she had spent her final months of imprisonment. She was incapacitated and couldn’t even recognize him.

Suspecting that Ms. Liu Huiping had developed mental issues, her husband Mr. Zhong Qingmiao took her to the Jiujiang City No.5 People’s Hospital (a psychiatric hospital) for a checkup. A doctor there confirmed that she was suffering some mental disorders, but suggested that she be treated for her physical health issues at another hospital first, as the use of psychiatric drugs may cause strong reactions in her.
Mr. Zhong heeded the doctor’s advice and took Ms. Liu to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiujiang University, which was closer to their home. But Ms. Liu refused any form of treatment or food. Mr. Zhong spent a lot of time trying to persuade her but to no avail. He then sought help from Ms. Liu’s sister and brother, who talked to her via video calls, but Ms. Liu still refused to communicate with them. She appeared to be paranoid, thinking that everyone, including doctors and nurses, was out to get her.
Ms. Liu, a native of Changde City, Hunan Province, married Mr. Zhong in 2021 and moved to Jiujiang in May 2022. She took good care of his son, a 6th grader who had a learning disability, as well as his 85-year-old father.
A group of plainclothes officers knocked on Ms. Liu’s door on September 26, 2022. She refused to open the door, so the police climbed into her home through the window. The printer she used to print study materials for her stepson and her cellphone were confiscated.
The police accused Ms. Liu of teaching her stepson to practice Falun Gong. The police later went to her then-13-year-old stepson’s school, asked him many questions, and videotaped him with no guardian present.
The Yongxiu County Court later sentenced Ms. Liu to nine months in prison. Mr. Zhong hired the same trial lawyer to appeal her sentence. When the lawyer visited her on June 16, 2023, to collect information about her appeals case, Ms. Liu refused to sign the paperwork and denied having ever known her husband. She changed her statements a bit later and said that she hated Mr. Zhong and his son and everyone else in his extended family.
Mr. Zhong suspected that Ms. Liu must have endured unimaginable torture and abuse while in custody. Her condition upon her release ten days later also confirmed his suspicions.
Mr. Zhong took Ms. Liu to see several top psychiatrists on July 4. They determined that she had severe mental disorders. They also suggested postponing the mental health treatment until her overall health had improved.
After two weeks of rehabilitation at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiujiang University, Ms. Liu was transferred to the Jiujiang City No.5 People’s Hospital on July 19 for specialized treatment.
Shortly after, Mr. Zhong’s elderly father suffered another stroke. Mr. Zhong now struggles to care for his father, wife, and son.
