Gansu Woman Taken into Custody, Likely to Serve Wrongful Prison Term for Practicing Falun Gong

Oct. 26, 2024 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Gansu Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Pingliang City, Gansu Province, resident, was taken back into custody on October 19, 2024, two months after a court hearing for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Qi Jie, 59, was arrested on November 13, 2023, for talking to people about Falun Gong. Her home was also ransacked. Although the police released her on bail after briefly holding her at the Kongtong Mountain Lockup, they kept coming back to harass her, forcing her to live away from home.

The Kongtong District Domestic Security Division later submitted Ms. Qi’s case to the Kongtong District Procuratorate. Her family was informed in July 2024 that she had been indicted and her case had been forwarded to the Kongtong District Court.

Ms. Qi appeared in court on August 23, 2024. The bailiffs forcibly took her to the hospital for a physical examination on October 19, 2024 and she was admitted to the local detention center on the same day. The police informed her family in the evening that she would be detained for four months. Her family suspected that she had been sentenced, but they didn’t receive any update from either the court or the police.

This isn’t the first time that Ms. Qi has been targeted for her faith. She was previously arrested on December 10, 2009, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was taken to the Pingliang City Domestic Security Division and detained for 15 days.

Ms. Qi was arrested again on September 20, 2010, also after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. The police ransacked her home in the afternoon. As she was rejected admission by the local lockup due to a physical condition, she was picked up by her family after midnight, after the authorities extorted 600 yuan from them.

Ms. Qi was arrested another time on November 7, 2019 and detained for 15 days.
