While trying to avoid arrest during a police chase in late September 2023, Ms. Ma Lianfeng lost control of her tricycle and fell down. She sustained severe leg injuries and her arms and back were badly bruised.

The police caught up with her and confiscated Falun Gong materials from her bag. They targeted her because an elementary school pupil had reported her for talking to him about Falun Gong. When she couldn’t even stand up on her own, they didn’t arrest her.

Ms. Ma of Longkou City, Shandong Province, never recovered from her injuries. She died on January 22, 2024, at the age of 69.

Ms. Ma Lianfeng

Ms. Ma took up Falun Gong on November 17, 1997, and was repeatedly persecuted after the communist regime launched a nationwide campaign against the practice in July 1999. Her husband feared being implicated and filed for divorce. She did not agree but the Longkou City Court granted the divorce in April 2002.

Ms. Ma was arrested again on November 6, 2003, and sentenced to seven years in prison. Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, the guards at Shandong Province Women’s Prison drugged her and subjected her to all kinds of physical torture. Years after she was released in 2010, she still suffered from complications of involuntary drug administration. Her head would sway uncontrollably from time to time.

Ms. Ma had reached the retirement age at the time of her release from prison in 2010, but her employer, the Longkou Supply and Marketing Cooperative, and the Longkou City Labor Department, refused to issue her her retirement benefits because she had become “ineligible” during her imprisonment. They demanded a one-time contribution of 50,000 yuan in order for her to qualify for a monthly pension of a little over 700 yuan. She had no money and gave up trying to get retirement benefits.

See the related report for Ms. Ma’s personal account of her early years of persecution. The rest of the report details her suffering in her final years prior to the police chase in September 2023.

Ms. Ma was arrested in May 2019 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. The arresting officers from the Longkou City Police Department took her for a physical exam required for detention. She refused to be examined and was released shortly afterwards.

Three officers broke into Ms. Ma’s home on the afternoon of June 4, 2021. They had their bodycam on and also used their cell phones to take picture of her and her home. They asked if she still practiced Falun Gong. She said she did and they left.

Two other officers harassed Ms. Ma at home on the morning of August 19, 2022. They took pictures of her and warned her to not go out to raise awareness of the persecution. She was arrested about a month or two later after being spotted by the police talking to people about Falun Gong. The arresting officers from the Longkou City Police Department attempted to collect her fingerprints and force her to have a physical exam. When she refused to comply, the police called her daughter, threatening to have her fired from her job if her mother kept talking to people about Falun Gong. The younger woman was so terrified that she cried. Ms. Ma was released shortly after.

Two officers knocked on Ms. Ma’s door after 2 p.m. on March 3, 2023. She opened her door slightly and saw one officer pointing his cell phone camera at her. She condemned them for harassing her and closed the door. They tried to push it open but failed and left.
