(Minghui.org) It was recently learned that a resident of Jinghai District, Tianjin, had been sentenced to 4 or 5 years following her arrest in August 2022 for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
The exact arrest time and prison sentence of Ms. Xu Fengyu remain to be investigated. It is only known that she has been held at the Jinghai District Detention Center since her arrest.
This is not the first time that Ms. Xu (whose name had also previously been mistakenly reported as being Xu Fengyi) has been targeted for her faith. She was previously sentenced to 1.5 years in 2007.
Ms. Xu and four other local practitioners, including Ms. Wei Tongyu, Mr. Ren Dongsheng, Ms. Zhai Shuqin, and Ms. Cheng Dianrong, went to a nearby village to talk to people about Falun Gong on the night of March 7, 2006. They were reported to police and Mr. Ren, Ms. Zhai, and Ms. Cheng were arrested on the spot and taken to the Caogongzhuang Police Station.
Ms. Xu and Ms. Wei escaped, but the police soon caught up with Ms. Xu and arrested her. Ms. Wei managed to return home that night, only to be arrested the next day. The Jinghai District Police Department raided all five practitioners’ homes that day.
The five practitioners were issued formal arrest warrants around April 2006 and appeared at the Jinghai District Court on June 27, 2007. Prosecutor Liang Yuqi was present at the trial. Judge Li Guoxiu sentenced Mr. Ren to five years and gave Ms. Cheng and Ms. Xu each one and a half years.
Ms. Xu was arrested again on August 26, 2014, while distributing Falun Gong informational materials at a local fair. The arresting officers from the Xiyu Police Station dragged her to their cruiser by the handcuff. Another practitioner, Ms. Du Fengguang, who was with Ms. Xu, was arrested at the same time. It was unclear what kind of prosecution the two women may have been subjected to.
