(Minghui.org) It was recently learned that a 51-year-old resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province, had been sentenced to four years for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Zhang Meiju was arrested on November 22, 2023 by officers from the Heping Street Police Station in Luyuan District. Her husband, who does not practice Falun Gong, was taken from their home along with her. The police targeted him too because he was found to be using paper currency with printed Falun Gong messages to pay bus fare every day (they had people follow him for weeks before the arrest). He was detained for seven days.
Ms. Zhang was taken to the Changchun City Women’s Detention Center. Her family was denied visits with her and only told to deposit money into her commissary account. They found out about her prison sentence recently, but knew nothing else about her prosecution except that the Chaoyang District Procuratorate and the Chaoyang District Court, which have been designated to handle Falun Gong cases in the greater Changchun area, indicted and sentenced her. It is unclear whether she has been admitted to prison.
Following Ms. Zhang’s arrest, her employer, the Luyuan District Sanitation Department, suspended her pay and stopped making contributions to her pension account.
