(Minghui.org) A woman in Yantai City, Shandong Province, was sentenced to one and a half years with a 5,000-yuan fine in late December 2024 for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Zhang Jianqiu was arrested on June 24, 2024, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong at a local fair. Officers from the Cunliji Town Police Station raided her home that afternoon and confiscated her computer, printer, and Falun Gong books. They told her family that she was given 13 days of administrative detention in the Penglai District Lockup.
The Penglai District Procuratorate notified Ms. Zhang’s family on July 5 that she’d been transferred to the Yantai City Detention Center. Officer Wang Longqing (+86-18660069331) from the Penglai District Police Department called the family on August 1 to say that they were requesting a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Zhang from the procuratorate.
Her family received a notice on August 6, ordering them to go to the procuratorate to sign the arrest warrant on her behalf. They refused to comply. The police submitted her case to the procuratorate on September 25, and she was indicted two days later.
The Penglai District Court heard Ms. Zhang’s case on November 20 and December 23. She was sentenced days after her second hearing.
