Ms. Li Yongxiu of Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province, died on February 21, 2016, after repeated incidents of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Li was fired by her employer, the Bayi Mattress Factory, for going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. The factory management also put up posters smearing her character. In 2002, her husband was forced to divorce her.
Ms. Li was arrested at the end of December 2004 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was taken to a brainwashing center that night. To protest, she went on a hunger strike for 28 days and became extremely weak.
Chang Ping, head of the local 610 Office, took Ms. Li to a mental hospital, where she was held for 39 days. Doctors Tang Ying and Xie Fang injected her with unknown drugs, causing her to have uncontrollable spasms and heart palpitations. A nurse also burnt her lips on purpose by feeding her boiling soup. She had blisters as a result. When she refused to open her mouth, the nurse pried it open and poked inside, making her mouth bleed and fester. Doctor Tang said, “We’re not worried if you die. We have ventilators and can revive you.” Despite her condition, they kept her tied up and shackled.
One day, a kind nurse alerted Ms. Li that there excessive potassium was being added to the drugs given to her. Two days later, she began to have chills all over. It was around May at the time, yet she still felt extremely cold even with two comforters. Then she started shivering and feeling muddleheaded. Her complexion became yellowish as well.
Ms. Li was sent back to the brainwashing center after 39 days in the hospital, only to be taken to the hospital again after some time. She was again given unknown drugs that caused heart palpitations. Liao Mingfang, wife of the hospital president, accused her of pretending to be sick. She passed out several times. Only then did the 610 Office notify her local Longfeng Town government to pick her up and take her to her parents’ home.
Ms. Li’s father Mr. Hu Dingfang and her sister Ms. Li Yongxian, both Falun Gong practitioners, were out shopping together on November 20, 2009, when several officers seized Yongxian. Mr. Hu was terrified and tried to stop them, only for them to beat him. He became bedridden after returning home but officer Liu Guanghua still harassed him. He died less than six months later.
Ms. Li Yongxiu was arrested at home on May 14, 2010. Her computer and printer were confiscated. An officer punched her twice when she refused to go with them. Her son, who did not practice Falun Gong, was also arrested but released hours later.
Several officers scaled Ms. Li’s fence and broke in on December 6, 2011. They confiscated her Falun Gong books. She and her son were still living in her ex-husband’s employer-sponsored housing at the time. Her ex-husband’s employer summoned him to the workplace to write thought reports and threatened to discipline him for his ex-wife’s faith. They also expelled his son from the housing the next day.
