A 79-year-old resident of Xiangtan County, Hunan Province died on June 23, 2022, after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Shi Qiaoyun was first arrested on January 19, 2010 and sentenced to three years of probation eight months later. She was released on September 28, 2010.

She was arrested again on May 22, 2019, after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. The Yuhu District Court ordered three months of surveillance, between May 26 and August 25, 2020. She was forced to wear a monitoring device on her wrist.

Wearing the monitoring device caused Ms. Shi to suffer tightness in her chest. Her weight kept dropping, and a month later she went to the police station and demanded that it be removed. The police ordered her to pay 100 yuan and installed a tracking device on her cellphone. She was also not allowed to leave her home.

After the three-month surveillance ended, the authorities continued to harass Ms. Shi. She lived in constant fear and suffered declining health. With only a few hundred yuan of low-income subsidy each month, Ms. Shi struggled to make ends meet and couldn’t afford to buy enough food. She passed away on June 23, 2022.
