Ms. Wang Guozhen, a former manager at the Honggang Oil Production Plant in Songyuan City, Jilin Province, struggled with poor health after being released from the detention center in January 2016. She struggled to recover, yet still had to face frequent police harassment. She passed away on May 14, 2020. She was 67.
After the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, the managers at Ms. Wang’s workplace held a brainwashing session, targeting the employees who were practitioners. Ms. Wang refused to attend and was monitored around the clock. She was later forced to retire.
Ms. Wang moved to Siping City in the same province for a job opportunity. She was arrested in April 2001 and taken back to the Honggang Oil Production Plant Police Station for interrogation. She was restrained in a metal chair for three days, transferred to the detention center for one night, and then taken to the Daan Lockup for over a month. After that, the police took her back to the Jilin Oilfield Police Department and gave her one year at the Heizuizi Forced Labor Camp.
In the labor camp, she was forced to sit on a small stool without moving from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. While sitting, she was bombarded with brainwashing by former practitioners who had given up the practice. Later on, the guards began to force her to work for long hours every day without pay, mostly making craft birds.
After she was released, she was forced to live away from home to hide from the police.
Ms. Wang was arrested again at home around 6 a.m. on May 23, 2015. Her home was ransacked. She was held at the Songyuan Detention Center and denied family visitation during the time. Her family weren’t allowed to hire a lawyer for her either.
When she appeared in the Songyuan City Court on September 11, 2015, after four months of detention, she was seriously ill. The judge later sentenced her to three years with a four-year probation. She was released in January 2016, yet still had to face frequent harassment by the police and residential committee staffers. Both she and her family lived in fear every day.
Due to the mental pressure, she never recovered and passed away on the early morning of May 14, 2020.
