(Minghui.org) A man in his 60s has developed diabetes due to the abuses he suffered while serving a 22-month term for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Lu Lianyi, of Pinggu District, Beijing, was arrested on February 6, 2024, for distributing flyers about Falun Gong. The police raided his home and confiscated his computer, cell phone, Falun Gong books, hats, clothing, and other valuables.
After 32 days of detention at the Pinggu District Detention Center, Mr. Lu was released in March 2024, only to be taken back into custody on June 5 that year. His home was raided again, and he was taken to the same detention center.
Mr. Lu’s family wasn’t given updates on his case status, including his indictment or trial. They were shocked to receive a notice in the mail from the Pinggu District Court in November 2025 stating that Mr. Lu had been sentenced to one year and ten months with a 4,000 yuan ($568) fine weeks earlier. They also learned that lawyer Ma Jinbao from the Shiyu Law Firm was appointed to enter a guilty plea for him in the trial.
Since Mr. Lu was already detained for 32 days following his February 2024 arrest, the verdict stated that he has one year and nine months to serve since his June 2024 arrest, with his term ending on March 4, 2026.
Mr. Lu was first taken to the Chadian Prison in Tianjin, a municipality about 90 miles from Beijing, and later transferred to Division Three at the Qianjin Prison in Beijing. The division director, Lu Wei (no relation to Mr. Lu) instigated inmate head Pan Xiaoming to transform Mr. Lu. Pan ordered other inmates to remove the mattress pad from Mr. Lu’s bed and forced him to sleep on an uneven board covered with a sheet only. Mr. Lu developed diabetes due to the abuse and is forced to take unknown drugs.
