A 65-year-old resident of Shenze County, Hebei Province died on February 25, 2023, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang Xingzhuan, a doctor, was arrested in January 2001 and held at the Shenze County Detention Center for two months. The guards there often beat her and slapped her in the face. She almost fainted from the brutal beatings at one time. On March 9 that year, a guard whipped her with a club more than ten times, when she was still unconscious from an earlier round of beatings. Five days later, director Zhang Yanying put shackles on her when she was still covered with bruises and experiencing pain all over her body.
Ms. Zhang visited family in Anhui Province in late September 2009 and was arrested. She was given one year of forced labor at the Hebei Province Women’s Labor Camp.
The guards did not allow Ms. Zhang to sleep at all during her first two days at the labor camp. She dozed off on the third day. Starting the fourth day, the guards only allowed her one or two hours (occasionally three hours) of sleep every night.
During her first month, Ms. Zhang was forced to stand day and night. Later the guards ordered her to do hard labor during the day and forced her to stand during lunch time and at night. They also did not allow her to brush her teeth, wash her face or do her laundry.
Ms. Zhang once yelled “Falun Dafa is good” and the guards handcuffed her for a whole day. Another time she did the Falun Gong exercises, and the guards beat her so badly that she had injuries all over.
More than 400 locals signed a petition seeking her release, but the labor camp did not release her until her term ended in late October 2010.
About seven officers and government employees broke into Ms. Zhang’s home on March 25, 2011 and attempted to arrest her again. Her husband and mother-in-law, who lived with the couple, managed to stop them from taking her away.
Deputy chief Tan Yongzhan and a government officer showed up at Ms. Zhang’s home on September 4, 2017. She was not in and they left. Tan returned in July 2018 with another officer and asked if she still practiced Falun Gong.
The relentless persecution claimed Ms. Zhang’s life on February 25, 2023.
