A woman in Fushun City, Liaoning Province, passed away in December 2019 after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. She was 70. Her husband lost his life for the same reason five years later.
Ms. Wang Guilan was first arrested on September 5, 1999, when she and her husband, Mr. Wang Zhongsheng, went to Tiananmen Square in Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. They were taken to the Fushun City’s Liaison Office in Beijing and then escorted back home. Wang Zhongfa, the chief of Dasiping Town Police Station, shouted at them, ordering them to turn in all the cash they had on them to pay for the police’s travel expense. He also threatened to bankrupt them. The couple was then taken to the Xinbin Detention Center and fined 500 yuan each. They were held for 43 days.
In November 1999, Mr. Wang was fired by his employer, the Xinbin County Communist Party School. The town director went on TV to announce their decision to fire Mr. Wang. He was given two yeas at the Fushun Forced Labor Camp a month later and released in October 2000, to finish the rest of his term at home.
After losing his job as a senior lecturer at the Party School, Mr. Wang made a living sharpening scissors and knives and tutoring. The authorities continued to arrest and harass him from time to time.
Succumbing to the mental pressure of the persecution, Ms. Wang died in December 2019. A year later, Mr. Wang was arrested again and sentenced to four years. He ended up critical condition in the prison due to torture and was released on April 30, 2024. He died seven months later on November 16. He was 78.
