A Kaifeng City, Henan Province resident passed away on May 5, 2025, after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. She was 73.

Ms. Xin Chunting was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She spent a fortune seeking treatment, but to no avail. Shortly after she began to practice Falun Gong in 1997, she recovered. Grateful for Falun Gong, she spared no efforts sharing her experience with people and raising awareness about the persecution after it was started by the Chinese Communist Party in 1999.

Because of her efforts, she was repeatedly arrested, harassed, and held in brainwashing centers. She also served a two-year labor camp and a five-year prison term. Her persecution caused tremendous mental pressure to her husband. His health declined quickly and he died of a terminal illness.

Since 2023, the local police harassed Ms. Xin even more frequently and often broke into her home to search for Falun Gong related materials when she wasn’t around. She eventually succumbed to the relentless persecution on May 5, 2025.

Overview of Ms. Xin’s Persecution

On July 20, 1999, the day when the persecution started, Ms. Xin was arrested and held at the local police station for a day. She went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice her faith in 2000. She was arrested, given a two-year labor camp term and fined 3,000 yuan.

Ms. Xin was arrested again in early 2002 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was given another two-year labor camp term and was exempted from serving time after the labor camp refused to admit her.

While walking down the street on May 25, 2002, Ms. Xin was seized by officers from the Beidaomen Police Station and taken to a brainwashing center. She held a hunger strike for 12 days and was then released. She was arrested again in July 2002 and taken to a lockup. The guards refused to accept her and she was released.

During a police sweep on September 26, 2002, Ms. Xin managed to escape. The police stayed at her home and even followed her husband when he used the restroom. Her son was ordered to report to the police station every day. Her daughter, who was working in Zhoukou, about 100 miles away, was also approached by the police. Her other relatives, both in Kaifeng and other cities, were harassed as well.

After one month of displacement, Ms. Xin was arrested on October 26, 2002 in Zhengzhou City, about 50 miles from Kaifeng. She was locked in a metal cage at the Wuchaomen Police Station for five days and then taken to a labor camp. After the guards refused to take her, the police took her to a brainwashing center.

After Ms. Xin was released, she reported her persecution to the Minghui.org website. In retaliation, Chen Zhonghe, the deputy chief of Longting District Police Department, arrested her daughter and locked her in a metal cage for nine days. They also seized Ms. Xin’s husband and held him in another metal cage for four days. Ms. Xin was held at a brainwashing center for eight months. As she refused to listen to the propaganda smearing Falun Gong, she was often held in solitary confinement.

On May 28, 2003, not long after Ms. Xin was released from the brainwashing center, officers Kang Peijian and Yan Baosheng of the Xinmenguan Police Station and community director Qian Yan harassed her at home and searched her place. They kept pressuring her and her husband to move out of the neighborhood.

To force her to move, the officers arranged people to spread feces on Ms. Xin’s front door on the evening of August 20, 2003. The officers sealed their door with feces again on the evening of September 1. When Ms. Xin’s husband was looking for an apartment in the east suburb of the city, Qian had someone following him. Qian and a few people went to the Pingguoyuan Police Station overseeing the new apartment’s neighborhood the next day and told the police chief about Ms. Xin’s practicing Falun Gong.

Officers from the Pingguoyuan Police Station worked with their counterparts from the Xinmenguan Police Station and arrested Ms. Xin and took her to the Shibalihe Forced Labor Camp in Zhengzhou. She was denied admission and taken back home. Yet the police and community office didn’t stop to harass her. On the evening of November 23, 2003, someone smashed her door and windows with bricks and spread feces on her door again. A week later, her door and new windows were smashed again and spread with feces; her yard was full of bricks, feces and urine. She reported the incidents to the police, who turned a blind eye to it.

Ms. Xin was arrested again on July 4, 2005. Following another arrest on May 17, 2008, she was sentenced to five years. Her last documented arrest was on December 16, 2020, by Zhao Penghui, the deputy chief of the Beijiao Township Police Station.

Zhao and three Procuratorate staffers harassed Ms. Xin on January 18, 2022 and interrogated her. Zhao also harassed and intimidated her daughter’s family.

Starting in 2023, Sun Zhiqian of the Beijiao Township Police Station often harassed Ms. Xin. He broke into her home two or three times every month, when she was out, with the help of the property management personnel. Once, Sun pocketed 300 yuan cash that she had prepared to pay for her apartment rent. Another time, he took away two flash drives, her personal letters, and study notes. Sometimes he returned the items after examining them.

Ms. Xin installed surveillance cameras at home. When Sun came again, he would cut off the power to the surveillance cameras and then re-connect it when he left.

Succumbing to the non-stop persecution, Ms. Xin passed away on May 5, 2025.
