(Minghui.org) A woman in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, has been unable to speak due to hypertension for several years, yet the authorities still attempted to take her into custody to serve a prison term given in September 2020.
The wrongful conviction of Ms. Gao Jiping, in her 60s, stemmed from her arrest on September 7, 2019. Her husband, Mr. Zhou Shaoshan, and their daughter, Ms. Zhou Na, were also seized at that time. The police targeted the family because they practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Gao was released on bail ten days later due to poor health. She, her husband and their daughter were later sentenced on September 23, 2020. The couple were each given three years and their daughter was sentenced to two years. After their appeals were rejected in early 2021, Mr. Zhou was admitted to the Jinzhong Prison on March 30, 2021 and Ms. Zhou was ordered to continue serving time at the Gujiao City Detention Center.
The authorities have since made multiple attempts to put Ms. Gao in jail but failed each time.
In late April 2021, the Wanbailin District Court ordered Ms. Gao to undergo physical exams at several hospitals. The results all indicated that she had severe health issues and was unfit for detention.
The Heping South Road Police Station took Ms. Gao for a physical exam in July 2021. She was again deemed unfit for detention and sent home.
Four officers harassed Ms. Gao at home on February 7, 2023 and left without arresting her.
Three different officers took Ms. Gao for a physical exam around 10 a.m. on February 24, 2023. They submitted her exam report to the Taiyuan City Intermediate Court. Since she did not meet the detention requirements, she was allowed to remain on bail.
Around 5 p.m. on September 2, 2025, Ms. Gao was walking past the south entrance of Taiyuan University of Technology when officers from the Heping South Road Police Station suddenly grabbed her. They took her to the Taiyuan City Fourth People’s Hospital for a physical exam. The next day they took her to the Shanxi Province Cardiovascular Hospital for another physical exam. They held her at the Changfeng Street Police Station that night. On September 4, they took her to the Shanxi Province Chinese Medicine University Affiliated Hospital for a third physical exam.
All three exams indicated that Ms. Gao was unfit for detention. Nonetheless, the police still took her to the Taiyuan City Fourth Detention Center around 6 p.m. on September 4, 2025. The detention center refused to admit her and the police took her back to the police station around 11 p.m. They notified her husband to pick her up. They did not tell him that his wife underwent three physical exams.
