61-Year-Old Yunnan Man Gets Another 5 Years After 3 Prior Prison Sentences Totaling 15 Years for His Faith in Falun Gong

Jan. 16, 2026 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Yunnan Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 61-year-old man in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, was sentenced to five years and fined 50,000 yuan on December 26, 2025, for his faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Judge Li Zhongyuan from the Wuhua District Court, along with his assistant judges Jiang Jingfeng and Long Youyi, their assistant Chen Hao, and clerk Yang Haiyan, signed the verdict against Mr. Han Zhenkun. He has filed an appeal.

Details of Trial

Mr. Han was arrested in May 2025 and stood trial at the Wuhua District Court on December 1.

Judge Li (+86-871-68261209) only allowed one of Mr. Han’s family members to attend the hearing. When he was escorted into the courthouse from a side entrance by eight bailiffs, he tried to greet other family members who were blocked outside, but was stopped.

During the trial, Mr. Han’s lawyer asked why he held firm to his faith despite the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong. He replied that he started doing the practice with his parents after seeing how it helped them regain their health.

Judge Li stopped Mr. Han and warned him that he could only answer yes or no to all questions. His lawyer next asked if he had placed a flash drive containing Falun Gong information in a car months before his arrest, as alleged by the police. He replied that “Falun Gong causes no harm to society.” Li cut him off and ordered him to answer yes or no.

Mr. Han said he had no recollection of whether he placed the flash drive in the car or not. He asked to have the prosecution witness, the car owner, appear in court to accept cross-examination. Judge Li brushed him off and asked his lawyer to explain what happened.

The lawyer pointed out that even if his client had placed the flash drive as alleged, he did nothing wrong, as no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong. The lawyer further cast doubt on the flash drive-related “evidence” against his client.

The indictment stated that the car owner reported discovering the flash drive in his car after having taken it home and viewed its contents on his own computer. The lawyer could not rule out the possibility that the car owner or the police had altered the contents of the flash drive.

The indictment further stated that the contents of the flash drive caused him harm. The car owner, however, was not present to explain what exactly on the flash drive he found harmful to him.

The lawyer reiterated that the prosecution failed to demonstrate what harm his client had allegedly caused to any individual or society at large.

When making his closing remarks, Mr. Han emphasized that it was his constitutional right to freedom of belief and that the relentless persecution of him for his faith was a violation of his human rights. He previously served three prison terms totaling 15 years, including a seven-year term (April 2004 – April 2011) and two four-year terms (September 2013 – September 2017 and September 2019 – September 2023). He demanded an acquittal. Judge Li still convicted him on December 26, 2025.
