After spending 13.5 years behind bars for upholding his faith in Falun Gong, Mr. Lu Yuncheng developed bowel cancer and died on March 9, 2023. He was 77.

Mr. Lu of Shenyang City, Liaocheng Province, started to practice Falun Gong with his wife, Ms. Pang Huijie, before the Chinese Communist Party launched the persecution in 1999.

Mr. Lu went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong after the persecution began, was arrested, and was sent to a forced labor camp for one year.

Mr. Lu was arrested at home in 2002. The authorities secretly sentenced him to five years and admitted him to Dongling Prison in Shenyang. For seeking his release, Ms. Pang was also arrested and sentenced to three years.

The couple were arrested together on March 25, 2011. The police took photos of their couplets about Falun Gong and confiscated their computer, printers and other office supplies. When Mr. Lu’s children brought him clean clothes in the detention center, they took back his dirty laundry and noticed his jacket had a torn sleeve and footprints all over it. They suspected he might have been tortured in custody.

Mr. Lu and Ms. Pang appeared in the Yuhong District Court on August 23, 2011. Only a few family members were allowed in the courtroom. During the couple’s second hearing on October 11, 2011, they were deprived of legal representation, and their children weren’t allowed to attend the session. The judge ordered their children to wait outside for the verdicts, but when they knocked on the door hours later, the courtroom was empty, everyone having left long before by the back door.

Mr. Lu was later sentenced to 7.5 years and Ms. Pang was given four years. Both of them were taken to the prison complex in Shenyang to serve time.

The persecution caused Mr. Lu intense physical and mental pressure. He developed bowel cancer after he was released, and he died on March 9, 2023.
